Lawyer; general in the Union Army during the Civil War; candidate for Presidential Elector for Ohio; member of Ohio state house of representatives, 1874-78; U.S. Representative from Ohio, 1885-91, 1893-1907 (14th District 1885-87, 15th District 1887-91, 11th District 1893-1907); delegate to Republican National Convention from Ohio, 1896(chair, Committee on Permanent Organization; speaker),1900,1904(alternate). Died in Athens, Athens County, Ohio, October 30, 1917 (age 84 years, 40 days). Interment at West Union Street Cemetery.
