Welcome to Prize Get! a LiveJournal community for collectors of Japanese UFO Catcher prize items.

What is a UFO Catcher?
UFO Catcher is an amusement game machine made by Sega that is basically a "crane game" in which you position and try to grab a prize with a claw. It gets the name UFO because the top of the claw is shaped like a flying saucer. There are also other types of games, but they are all known by the catch-all term of "UFO Catcher," even those machines not manufactured by Sega.
The variety of prizes you can win in the games is amazing, from the common plush toys to costumes, keychains, lamps, sewing machines, and even wall-mountable soap dispensers. These items are known as "amusement prizes" or "UFO Catchers" as well. If you are speaking with someone in-the-know outside of Japan, "UFO Catcher" usually refers to the plush toys that are won in those games. The prizes are exclusive not-for-sale goods that are only available for a limited time, which makes them highly collectible.
