However, we still face a lack of a shared understanding of media innovation within academia combined with an inability to clearly define what is innovation related to the news industry. This paper contributes to the necessity of better defining journalism innovation by analyzing seventeen highlighted projects on Google DNI Fund 2018 Report initiative. We propose a framework of five variables: implementation stage; innovation mindset; innovation focus/innovation target; proven journalist outcomes; and potential replicability degree. The conclusions show that news media innovators are searching for ecosystem solutions rather than worry about solutions for themselves. News business models and news narratives or formats are strongly connected, which means that media might finally understand that they should work for real users and not for imagined ones.

In this paper, we offer a case study of one such approach at PUCRS University in Brasil: from 2011 we have been challenging the students to make a journalistic app with Android AppInventor platform in the classroom. This paper addresses this experience and its perception of journalism and media students of PUCRS in Brazil.

This paper analyzes the informational synergy of transmedia in the news field. Through a conceptual digression, we discuss the word transmedia, as defined by Jenkins (2006), cross-media and multimedia, explaining the differences between all those concepts – sometimes treated by some authors as synonyms, although they are not. The ideas are revisited and verified through the study of Inside Disaster, a Canadian documentary about the 2010 Haitian earthquake that offers news by means of game, hypertext and video. Above all, we propose a reflection on the implications of the transmedia experience applied to journalism, a look at transmedia communication thinking not only about technology, but searching for a cultural and social interpretation, in a cultural perspective of the study of technology and journalism.

It is based on collaborative four-year research projects that mapped 123 labs within industry, civic society, and academia globally, with a focus on Latin America, North America and Europe. The data spans 45 interviews and 54 survey answers from lab leaders across 17 countries and covers 60 innovation outputs, with 30 closely related to media and journalism. The paper’s main theoretical frames incorporate open innovation and constructs from media innovation and media management. The results indicate that media labs are either within organisations or alongside them, producing projects systematically and experimentally as a reaction to digital disruption. Within an environment of scarcity, they catalyse innovation and combine technical and creative skills, unveiling solutions beyond new narratives or content-related innovations. ...

Research paper thumbnail of Future of Journalism Conference | Cardiff University | Innovation & COVID Brazilian Journalism

Coronavirus global widespread boosted new solutions led by a discomfort force (Flores, 2019), a c... more Coronavirus global widespread boosted new solutions led by a discomfort force (Flores, 2019), a common pattern for journalism, that usually reacts to change instead of leading innovation processes (Boczkowski, 2005). In a particular new social, economic and health environment, journalism had to respond fast and effectively, but in a short period that might have affected a possibly desired longer-term vision. This shorter-term thinking and pragmatic journalism culture were already discussed by Posetti (2018) and Boczkowski (2005). In fact, as an external innovation catalyst, the pandemic might have promoted a new kind of content responses, new businesses and contextual feedback.
In Brazil, as around the world, post-industrial journalism was marked by both moments of catastrophe and rebirth of journalistic organizations (Anderson, Bell and Shirky, 2012) propelled by digital disruption. The diminished entry barriers drove the emergence of nationwide initiatives as Nexo in 2015; niche strategies such as Jota, in 2014, and social-oriented digital natives as Ponte, in 2014, focused on Human Rights. These digital-born news media (Nicholls et al., 2018) oriented by a cause, as social justice, quality journalism, gender equality, represent the majority of these new Brazilian startups (Lüdtke, 2016). Social commitment is a media innovation characteristic also discussed by Storsul and Krumsvik (2013) and Dogruel (2017). Otherwise, Brazil is also known for its legacy media, as Globo and other major players. The pandemic urged responses for both digital-born and legacy operations.
Hence, this paper discusses the scenario of journalistic innovations implemented in the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the following research problems: what are the characteristics of journalism innovation that emerged at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic (March to August 2020) in Brazil?; and who led these innovations in the country (legacy media, digital natives, universities, consortia or Associations, Unions or NGOs)?. Innovation in journalism is understood as a practical and creative response, which arises through the identification and resolution of problems in new products, processes and services, adding value and, thus, making journalistic organizations viable (García-Avilés et al., 2019). The innovation in journalism is discussed based on previous researches that range from the approach of the media, technology, innovation processes and media management (Küng, 2013; Evans, 2018; Stoneman, 2010; Picard, 2005; García-Avilés et al., 2019; Storsul and Krumsvik, 2013; Kauhanen and Noppari, 2007; Dogruel, 2017; Flores, 2019; Nunes, 2020). Innovation journalism is, therefore, one that necessarily changes techniques, technologies, processes, languages, formats and/or devices designed to enhance the production, consumption and sustainability of information and/or journalistic organizations.
For addressing the research goals, a crowdsourcing strategy (Wechsler, 2014) was chosen. The methodological procedures included theoretical discussion, online survey for a collective mapping and exploratory case analysis. A total of 82 initiatives were nominated (62 unique entries).
The results were analysed considering the scope of innovation journalism (Flores, 2019), the materiality of innovation (Nunes, 2020), type of innovation (Nunes, 2020), geographical range (local, regional, national, international) and origin (legacy media, digital native, universities, consortium, Associations, Unions and NGOs). It was also noted if the projects were related to the context of COVID-19 and to which innovative aspect. This study is a qualitative (Yin, 2011) exploratory (Gil, 2002) and descriptive research (Mattar, Oliveira and Motta, 2014), which has the limitation of a crowdsourced random sample, spread through news channels, social media communities and academic emails groups. Thus, it might not define the whole of projects emerged but is still valid since it represents trends that appeared in the community.
The results indicate notoriety of discomfort as an engine of innovation, the rise of collaboration, and a focus on special coverages. Among the innovative features, we highlight data and mapping, urban intervention, fact-checking and verification, automation and interactivity, collaboration and new distribution channels. Digital-born news media led most innovations examined, confirming the dynamism and faster adaptation of these new incumbents. Half of the initiatives related to the coverage of the 2020 pandemic had a national reach, although regional (24%) and local (10%) examples have also appeared. The study shows innovation in journalism can be accelerated by a context like the pandemic, which raises new strategies and initiatives: most of the projects were related to the Coronavirus. However, this strength can also be (one more) catalyst for immediacy, with initiatives that end in an experimental project or narrative with a beginning, middle and end, with the impact of exploring selection or content compression, but not necessarily responding to the news industry’s medium or long-term survival challenges.
