The method was applied to the Solvay process, in which sodium bicarbonate is produced through the reaction of ammoniated brine and CO2 gas. The Solvay effluent contains ammonia in the form of soluble ammonium chloride. The proposed method is based on the recovery of ammonia using a high-alkalinity reactant, calcium oxide (CaO), in a closed electrocoagulation cell operating at a specific current density. The recovered ammonia is collected as a gas within a closed cell containing deionized (DI) water at room temperature. Afterwards, the collected solution (DI water–NH3 gas) is concentrated through a separate process, and is then reused in the Solvay process and other applications. The electrocoagulation process is applied to the treatment cell using aluminum electrodes and a current density of 5–15 mA/cm2. After 7 h of...

Processes, 2020

Steelmaking is an energy-intensive process that generates considerable amounts of by-products and... more Steelmaking is an energy-intensive process that generates considerable amounts of by-products and wastes, which often pose major environmental and economic challenges to the steel-making industry. One of these by-products is steel dust that is produced during the separation of impurities in the smelting and refining of metals in steel-making furnaces. In this study, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust has been evaluated as a potential, low-cost additive to increase the viscosity and weight of drilling muds. Currently, the cost of drilling operations typically accounts for 50 to 80% of the exploration costs and about 30 to 80% of the subsequent field development costs. Utilization of steelmaking waste in drilling fluids formulations is aimed to produce new and optimized water-based drilling formulations, which is expected to reduce the amount of bentonite and other viscosifier additives used in the drilling formulations. The results showed that in a typical water-based drilling fluid of ...

This paper aims to develop a comprehensive conceptual framework of the customer value proposition... more This paper aims to develop a comprehensive conceptual framework of the customer value proposition of formic acid as an actual outcome of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) to support clean production and environmental sustainability worldwide. This study included different phases. The first phase was an extensive reading of the literature, followed by a content analysis of the selected literature. The aim of the content analysis was to identify key concepts and the general categories of these concepts. The final phase was a content analysis of the selected literature with the purpose of identifying the relationship between concepts. The outcome of this paper is to provide a comprehensive framework of the customer value proposition of the CCU–formic acid product and consequently support global research efforts in sustainability. This framework contains two general dimensions: market knowledge and customer value. The first dimension includes five variables: the customers’ acceptance...

In the present study, Box–Behnken design in response surface methodology was used to optimize the adsorption process parameters for the maximum 4-NP removal at 30 ℃ using Fe3O4/Bt NC. The regression model results suggested that the optimum adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, pH and contact time were 0.3182 g, 85 mg/L, 11 and 137.2 min, respectively. The regression model showed an optimum removal of 100%, while 99.5% removal was obtained from batch experiments at the optimum conditions suggested by the regression model, which confirm the model validity. The adsorption data best fitted to Freundlich isotherm model and Pseudo second-order kinetic model suggesting the existence of physical and chemical interaction between the fabricated composite and 4-NP. FTIR analysis suggested that the adsorption mechanism included an electrostatic attrac...

Research paper thumbnail of A Mechanistic Gas Kick Model to Simulate Gas in A Riser with Water and Synthetic-Based Drilling Fluid

This model can estimate key kick parameters such as the change in the wellhead pressure, kick ascent time, and pit gain. In addition, this model also predicts the solubility of the gas kick in SBM at various depths in the annulus. We used the commercial chemical process simulation software, HYSYS, to validate the results of this solubility model. This paper also presents the gas kick experimental results from a 20-ft. tall vertical flow loop at Texas A&M University, Qatar. The base case investigates a gas kick in a vertical 10,000 ft. deep, 12.415 in. drilling riser with WBM. Our analytical model uses the Hasan-Kabir two-phase flow model and develops a set of equations that describe the pressure variation in the annulus. This computed pressure change allows estimates of pit-gain. Our experimental data comes from a 20-ft. tall flow loop w...

Research paper thumbnail of Comprehensive assessment and evaluation of correlations for gas-oil ratio, oil formation volume factor, gas viscosity, and gas density utilized in gas kick detection

The property correlations available in open literature are developed mostly for certain regions and conditions, which usually over-predict or under-predict when applied to different regions and conditions. To assess these correlations and to determine their applicability and accuracy, a comprehensive evaluation is performed for 63 empirical correlations of four gas properties; gas-oil ratio GOR, oil formation volume factor OFVF, gas viscosity, and gas density based on published laboratory measurements. The GOR and OFVF correlations were evaluated on a regional basis and three best-fit correlations are recommended for each selected region including the Middle East, Central & South America, North America, Africa, and Asia. A universal new correlation for the GOR is developed in this study that can be used for any region in the world with better accuracy and wider range ...

Research paper thumbnail of CO2 sequestration using accelerated gas-solid carbonation of pre-treated EAF steel-making bag house dust

Journal of environmental management, Jan 3, 2015

Mineral CO2 sequestration is a promising process for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions to... more Mineral CO2 sequestration is a promising process for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. In this paper, alkaline calcium-rich dust particles collected from bag filters of electric arc furnaces (EAF) for steel making were utilized as a viable raw material for mineral CO2 sequestration. The dust particles were pre-treated through hydration, drying and screening. The pre-treated particles were then subjected to direct gas-solid carbonation reaction in a fluidized-bed reactor. The carbonated products were characterized to determine the overall sequestration capacity and the mineralogical structures. Leaching tests were also performed to measure the extracted minerals from the carbonated dust and evaluate the carbonation process on dust stabilization. The experimental results indicated that CO2 could be sequestered using the pre-treated bag house dust. The maximum sequestration of CO2 was 0.657 kg/kg of dust, based on the total calcium content. The highest degree...

Research paper thumbnail of Adsorption of Crystal Violet on Sludge produced from Refinery Wastewater Treatment: Characterization of Sludge Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies

In the present study, the removal of Crystal Violet (CV) dye from aqueous solution by adsorption on sludge generated from waste treatment is reported. The characteristics of sludge were studied via thermal analyses (DTA, TGA), spectroscopic analyses (X-ray fluorescence- XRF, X-ray diffraction- XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The empirical formula for the sludge was determined from XRF data. The effect of pH on adsorption was studied, with the highest adsorption being found at pH 5. The adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushevich and Temkin for calculation of adsorption isotherm parameters. The kinetic studies were conducted by fitting the data obtained to pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and Elovich models. The adsorption of CV was found to obey a pseudo-second order model and the rate-limiting step was intraparticle diffusion. The effect of temperature on adsorption was also investigated. Adsorption was found to be an exothermic process. Thermodynamic parameters were also determined.
