Professor Selen Ayirtman Ercan is the Director of the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance and the Research Lead of Centre’s Building Democratic Resilience cluster. She is also a Chief Investigator on two Australian Research Council Projects, Democratic Resilience: The Public Sphere and Extremist Attacksand Monitoring Deliberative Integrity in Australia.

Selen's work sits at the intersection of normative theory and interpretive empirical research, and examines public deliberation in various settings ranging from structured forums to the wider public sphere in contemporary societies. Her research interests include: public deliberation in post-crisis/polarized contexts, deliberative mini-publics and democratic innovations, alternative forms of political participation including non-verbal participation and interpretive/qualitative methods.

Among Selen’s recent publications are Mending Democracy: Democratic Repair in Disconnected Times (Oxford University Press, 2020, with Hendriks and Boswell), and Research Methods in Deliberative Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2022 ed. with Asenbaum, Curato and Mendonça). Selen has authored over 50 articles and won the best paper prize of the journal Policy and Politics twice in 2018 and 2020.

Selen has received research grants and fellowships from, among others, Australian Research Council (multiple grants), New South Wales Government, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Australian National University, Heinrich Böll Foundation (Germany), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (Canada). She has held research positions at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (Germany), Australian National University (Australia); as well as visiting research/teaching fellowships in the Political Science programs of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), Nagoya University (Japan) and Stuttgart University (Germany).

Selen speaks English, German and Turkish.
