Reading Belakanes skin colour as an index and her story as a nod to the biblical Queen of Sheba and her reception history in the commentary tradition on the ›Song of Songs‹, I argue to integrate artistic and courtly, scholarly and theological perspectives to understand and appreciate the idiosyncrasy of Wolfram’s ›Parzival‹ fully.

The military expedition and the following siege are regarded as alien to the genre of Arthurian literature and have therefore either been criticized or marginalized. This study on the contrary considers the episode as an integral part of the whole work by exploring its intertextual links and relations. I argue that the text uses the earliest Arthurian tradition as a corresponding and opposing background. By invoking Arthur's campaign against Rome, described by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae the protagonist is contoured against the image of Arthur himself. Furthermore, a new dimension is added to the discussion of love and faithfulness by the negative example of Arthur and Ginover. Thus, the third part of Wirnt's Wigalois proves to be important for the reading of the whole work. Dabei sind die Helden ganz auf sich gestellt und müssen die Aufgaben durch den mutigen Einsatz ihres Schwertes und ihrer persönlichen Fähigkeiten lösen. As these have mostly been read from a structuralist point of view the sea has often been identified with the ‘topographic border’ in the sense described by Lotman. Even though this identification can be useful it overlooks much of the nature of the sea, which is modelled as a space with specific rules, functions and characteristics. The present study attempts to give an impression of the narrative potential of the sea in four works: ‘Rother’, ‘Kudrun’, ‘Münchener Oswald’ and ‘Salman’ with special regard to ideas of space and landscape.
