The evolution of instability in the wake of a flat plate under the effect of specified external p... more The evolution of instability in the wake of a flat plate under the effect of specified external perturbations is investigated by the method of discrete vortex particles. Attention is given to the evolution of symmetric and antisymmetric modes as well as their interaction. It is found that resonance interactions of the subharmonic type, previously observed in mixing layer only, occur in the wake in addition to the usual nonlinear effects of instability evolution (formation of combination modes).
A discrete vortex model is proposed for axisymmetric flows of an incompressible nonviscous fluid.... more A discrete vortex model is proposed for axisymmetric flows of an incompressible nonviscous fluid. First, a variational principle is formulated for a class of flows, and the vortex field is approximated by a discrete system of annular vortices. Equations of motion for this system are then derived using the variational principle. Under certain assumptions, equations used in some well-known vortex models are shown to follow from the equations obtained here. It is also shown that the proposed vortex model retains the principal properties of a continuum model, such as momentum and energy conservation.

Experiments have been conducted by means of high-speed video recording and using specialized software. Investigations have been performed for two and three successive droplets with the initial radius of 1.5 mm. The effect of droplet braking, coagulation and acceleration has been defined. The typical difference between velocities, sizes and distances of successive droplets has been demonstrated.

The velocity field induced by helical vortex flow in a cylindrical tube is described analytically, and the effect of energy separation in a vortex tube is examined. The effect of convective transfer on the energy separation process is estimated.

Using the detached circumfluence of a semi-infinite plate as the example, the proposed model is compared with the well-known models. The results of a numerical experiment involving the study of an unstable vortex are presented.
