dreadpirateange Jan. 3rd, 2008 07:47 pm Richard Gould's "Archaeology and the Social History of Ships"This book came out a few years ago (2000), but I recently re-read it for a course. If you haven't taken a look at it, I reccomend it. From the Earthwatch Institute: "This book reviews the current state of the art in maritime archaeology and address many of the questions most often asked about shipwrecks by scholars, sport divers, historic preservationists, and the general public. It includes chapters on what happens to ships when they sink, why they sink where they do, the evolution of ship technology, the history of maritime explorers, and the connection between ships and their cultural origins. It is the result of Gould's many years of research with Earthwatch volunteers in and around Bermuda, as well as his more general research around the world, and promises to be comprehensive and authoritative. Information on Archaeology and the Social History of Ships is available from Cambridge University Press and from any of the online bookstores."It's by far the most comprehensible and accessible work of its kind that I have seen out there, and can't say enough good things about it. It would also be of interest to historians, anthropologists, and anyone interested in the maritime industries. Have you read this book? What do you think?Leave a comment

zen_pirate Apr. 17th, 2006 09:42 pmHey all, I'm wanting to get into East Carolina University to study maritime history and underwater archaeology. I graduated with a BA in English last year and have had an internship with an underwater archaeology company, and am also scuba certified...I was wondering if anyone has gotten their masters from this school, and if so, how difficult is it to get into the program? Any suggestions are more than welcome.8 comments - Leave a comment

gaidheil1974 Feb. 10th, 2006 04:27 am Grad School DecisionI've pretty much decided I'd like to attend Texas A&M University's maritime archaeology graduate program. So I'm not really looking for advice on grad school. What I'm looking for is anyone who's attended TAMU and can tell me about their experiences with the archaeology department and/or answer some really mundane questions about the area and tell me about some expenses. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.Current Mood: awakeawakeCurrent Music: Black Cat by Janet Jackson4 comments - Leave a comment

dra7400 Apr. 3rd, 2005 01:14 am PhotographyI have a few questions that I'm hoping you guys might be able to help me out with. First of all, I came across this link today concerning free digital cameras I have 2 friends that have done things similar to this. One of them got a free Playstation, and the other got an iPod. I also found this Wired News article, (and make sure to read past the first sentence) that says these things are legitimate, but I am still very skeptical of the whole thing. So I am just wondering if any of you guys have any experience with these things? My wife loves photography, and she has a natural talent for it. She has taken some very beautiful photos of various nature settings, and we can't wait to get into underwater photography. Our current camera is an old HP Photosmart 620. It has served us well, but it is only a 2.1 megapixel camera, and even worse than that, I have not been able to find a water tight housing for it anywhere. So in order for us to branch into marine photography we are going to have to get a new camera. But they are SO expensive! So this brings me to my next couple of questions. Out of the cameras that are listed on the free camera site, I was able to find a housing from ikelite available for two of them. I was really leaning towards the Nikon Coolpix 5400 5.1 MP. Do any of you guys have this camera? or know anything about it good or bad? And lastly, I was wondering about different housings. I only really know about ikelite. Are there any others out there that are reputable? What would you guys recommend? Thanks for taking the time to read this guys, and I appreciate any advice you might have.Stay WetLeave a comment

dra7400 Feb. 19th, 2005 05:43 pm gulfcoast_diverI created a community for all Gulf Coast Area Divers and those interested in the marine world and tropical travel in general. This is a place to announce dives, Scuba and Marine related News, find a dive partner, announce training, special Dive trips around the area or Specials on Scuba equipment, or even a place to sell your used gear. From Mexico to Florida and everywhere in between! All post and ideas are welcome. We plan to also have an opt-in monthly newsletter. My wife rheavensara and I are pretty new to the area, and I began posting on various livejournal boards trying to find a local dive partner, and someone that could fill me in on the local dive scene. After a few post and talking to several people, it became pretty obvious that there was not much info out there, and the info that is out there is pretty spread out. So we decided to take it on ourselves to Create a community specifically for this purpose. It is my hope that we can get enough of a group together, to be able to compile a good bit of information on the area. And maybe form a group close enough so that if you are planning to visit an area, and need a dive buddy..maybe you will be able to find them here. Please join us, at gulfcoast_diver and share your knowledge and curiosities.X-postedLeave a comment
