It was implemented in 1976-77 and consisted of a household survey and a survey of individual ever-married women. In addition data from published reports of the 1986 Census and the 1987 Social and Economic Household Survey were analyzed. The decline of infant mortality was very significant. In 1976 women aged 15-19 reported only 76% of their live births alive at the time of the survey. In 1987 93% of children ever born to women in the 15-19 age group were alive. On the average Iranian women reported 4.6 live births in 1976. According to the 1986 census the average number of children ever born to women aged 15-19 was about half a child lower than the average reported for 1976. On the other hand there were only slight changes in rural areas since there was no fertility decline there in the 1970s. A regression analysis...

In particular, two hypotheses are offered and tested. The family planning responsibility hypothesis asserts that men's belief that family planning is the responsibility of women reduces the likelihood of their participation in family planning activities. The community norm hypothesis asserts that men's belief that community approves their participation in family planning activities increases their participation. Data is gathered in 1997 from a province in southern Iran. Multivariate statistical methods are used in order to analyze the data and test the research hypotheses. The results of analysis confirm both hypotheses and also show that communication between spouses increases the probability of using family planning methods by men.
