Always something to see, something to hear...

There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot. - John Cage

A silence party is when two or more people get together to be silent. The participants decide the rules of the occasion; for example, how much non-verbal communication they allow, what activities they will do, the location, etc. The only consistent rule is silence. When Jake and Shira play, they have two consistent rules: 1) no talking and 2) as little non-verbal communication as possible/necessary. There is no such thing as failing; if someone talks or has to talk then that's a part of the process, and the event continues.

This is a community centered around silence. You can post anything you want related to silence, organize silence parties and get-togethers, discuss your experiences, observations, variations of the game, or questions about silence parties or silence.

The idea for throwing a silence party was sparked by Jake and Shira's interest in Buddhism, meditation, John Cage, and silence. Every now and again, they party silently. Around lakes, around town, sitting still, in the car, while eating...
