Josephine du Pont, born Gabrielle Josephine de La Fite de Pelleport, was the daughter of the Marquis de Pelleport. She was educated at Versailles, where her father was in the service of the Comte d'Artois, brother of Louis XVI, and at the Abbaye de Port Royal in Paris. She married Victor du Pont in 1794 and came with him to America in 1797. They returned to France in 1798 but moved to America permanently in 1800 with other members of the du Pont family. Victor and his family lived in the New York City area until 1806, when they moved to Angelica in Genesee County, N.Y., where Victor was engaged in land speculation and operated a general store and tannery. In 1809 the family relocated to Delaware, where Victor's brother, E.I. du Pont had established his gunpowder mills.

Gabrielle Josephine de La Fite de Pelleport married Victor Marie du Pont in France in 1794. They travelled to the United States in 1795 when Victor was appointed as consul at Charleston, S.C. They came back to France in 1798 but returned to the U.S. with other members of the du Pont family in 1800, eventually settling in Delaware in 1809.
