Frederick E. Brasch was educated at Stanford University (1899), the University of California (1901), and Harvard (1916). He worked as a librarian at Stanford, in Chicago, St. Paul, MN, and in Washington, D.C. before becoming chief of the Library of Congress scientific collection in 1925. He served as corresponding secretary of the history of science section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science from 1920 through 1928. Brasch died in 1967.

Frederick Edward Brasch, librarian and bibliographer, was employed by numerous institutions including the Library of Congress, where he served as Chief of the Scientific Collection from 1925 to 1943. From 1948 until his death in 1967 he was a consultant in bibliography at Stanford University. His primary interest was the history of science.

Frederick E. Brasch, chief of the Smithsonian Division of the Library of Congress for many years, served on the Stanford Libraries staff as curator of this collection from 1948 until his death in 1967. Mr. Brasch attempted to build a library which would illuminate Newton's thought by tracing its origins and its influence; he brought together the works of Newton's teachers, colleagues, and disciples.

Biographical Note
Frederick Edward Brasch was born December 18, 1875, the son of Otto Wilhelm and Carolyn E. (Johannsen). He attended Stanford University from 1897-1899; Univ. of California, 1899-1901, Harvard, 1916. On August 5, 1903 he married Winnifred E. Orpin (who died June 11, 1938). The marriage produced two children, Carolyn Mildred and Maxwell Frederick.

In 1941, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Stanford University, F. E. Brasch donated his entire Newton Collection to the University, in gratitude for the opportunity of pursuing scientific astronomical studies there (1897-9).
Frederich Brasch died on October 26, 1967.
