The Grand Opera Company of Philadelphia was formed in 1929 under the directorship of William C. Hammer. At the time it was one of three permanent opera companies in the city, more than Manhattan and Chicago. Renowned English conductor Leopold Stokowski performed for the company in the 1930s. The Grand Opera Company merged with the Philadelphia Lyric Opera Company in 1975 and is now known as the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

The Grand Opera Company of Philadelphia operated between 1926 and 1932.
At the time it was one of three resident opera companies in the city. Philadelphia Orchestra conductor Leopold Stokowski led several important performances for the company during the 1930s, including the Philadelphia and New York premieres of Alban Berg's opera, Wozzeck (1931), which featured designs by Robert Edmond Jones, as well as the world premiere of Carlos Chávez's ballet, H.P. (1932), with designs by Diego Rivera and choreography by Catherine Littlefield.
