With a focus on such countries as Turkey, Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt, the authors contemplate the activities pursued by non-state actors. The impact of external forces on the political identities across the regional landscape is analyzed through the example of the United States policy of democracy promotion and the EU political approaches. The book may draw the attention of not only dedicated professionals, but also a much broader audience, who are interested in the major trends of political development and international affairs in the Middle East. It can serve as an indispensable tool for the educational purposes, considering a theoretical and practical value of the research efforts.
The Russian version of the book was awarded the Yevgeny V. Tarle Prize by the Russian Academy of Sciences

The study of the history and activities of the organization «Free Officers» is hardly possible without considering the evolution of the national-patriotic and political movements in the Egyptian army. During the second quarter of the 20 th century the Egyptian society experienced fairly turbulent and eventful political process that influenced the further development of the country. At present the study of role of army in liberation movement in the Middle East is extremely urgent since military structures have become the base of the state system of many Arabic countries.

These two states experienced the emergence and legalization of the first Salafi political parties in the Middle East. The authors trace the history of the Salafi movement in Egypt and Tunisia before the start of the revolutionary movement and after the change of the old regimes in the early 2011. The analysis is based on key publications regaring Salafism and political Islam, as well as on the original sources such as programmes of Salafi movements. According to the authors, contemporary Salafism must be distinquished from the so called 'traditional Islamism'. The study reveals that the Arab Spring events have widened the gulf in the Salafi movement and induced some Salafi groups to approach moderate 'traditional Islamists'. The findings of the study may lead to the revision of the popular view of Salafism in the Middle East as an exclusively extremist and radical trend in Islam.

In the fi rst half of XX century Egypt entered an important period of its history. As one of the fi rst formally independent Arab States, Egypt continued to struggle for full sovereignty from the United Kingdom while seeking to establish itself as a regional leader. In this regard, the leading thinkers of Egypt tried to determine the place of their country in the world and fi nd the most acceptable ideology for it, which could also rally other Arab, Muslim, Asian and African countries around Egypt. The article touched upon four concepts that were developed during the interwar period and infl uenced the further development of public thought in Egypt. Some thinkers have tried to develop a model of secular pan-Arabism based on the ideas of al-Kawakibi and al-Husri. For these authors, Egypt was an integral part of the Arab world and the core of its possi...
