splinteredlight - Profile (original) (raw)

This community is meant for English majors (of any type) and literature majors, as well as those who are interested in either, used to be English or lit majors, are considering declaring an English or lit major, or who would consider themselves honourary members of either (whew!).

Please note that any questions that might be interpreted as you asking us to do your homework for you will be deleted. Repeat offense will get you kicked. The moderator, ladyshrew (that should tell you something about her temperament), will be the final judge of what consists of a "homework question." However, general help, such as getting pointed in the right direction so that you may do your own research (please note that if you are asking the night before your paper is due, you're asking for more than a shove in the right direction--and please make sure you've done your own internet searches before asking for internet sources) will be acceptable from generally productive members (i.e. not a newbie who has just popped up for the sole purpose of asking for help with homework). Again, moderator's discretion, but she's not as scary as she sounds.

Welcome discussion includes--but is not limited to--any other lit discussion, experiences pertaining to the major, nuances of the major, etc. It's open discussion, just PLEASE NOT HOMEWORK.

This community is a branch from english_majors, a nice community that may be a little more tolerant of homework questions.

The community name is from an excerpt from Tolkien's "On Fairy-Stories":

“Dear Sir,” I said—Although now long estranged, Man is not wholly lost nor wholly changed. Dis-graced he may be, yet is not de-throned, and keeps the rags of lordship once he owned: Man, Sub-creator, the refracted Light through whom is splintered from a single White to many hues, and endlessly combined in living shapes that move from mind to mind. Though all the crannies of the world we filled with Elves and Goblins, though we dared to build Gods and their houses out of dark and light, and sowed the seed of dragons—'twas our right (used or misused). That right has not decayed: we make still by the law in which we're made.”
