Ultrafest at the 4 Star, day 2	[Jul. 22nd, 2023\|11:37 pm]Mato
[Tags\|fandom, film]I went back to the 4 Star Theater for Ultrafest today. I got the day pass. At 11:00AM was Ultraman: The Adventure Begins/Ultraman USA. Preceeded by an episode of Ultraman. At 2:00PM was an episode compilation of Ultraman: Towards the Future/Ultraman Great. Presentation and interview with Jack Shindo actor Dore Kraus before the screening. He talked about what it was like to go to Australia and work on the series. He changed his citizenship to work in Australia and Ultraman was his lucky break. It was supposed to be 26 episodes but it ran over budget and was cut down to 13 episodes. Also, the would not let him keep the UMA uniform or transformation pendant, even though they didn't really have a use for those afterward. He studied Tang Soo Do and Wing Chun. His Wing Chun teacher was William Chung, student of Yip Man and a teacher of Bruce Lee. Tsuburaya Productions packed up and left the South Australia Film Company holding the back for like $7million of budget overrun. That's why the Ultraman series was never aired on TV there. Also an episode of Ultra 7. At 5:00PM was the Ultraman Mebius era movie Superior Ultra 8 Brothers. That was a fantastic movie as a tribute and love letter to the old Ultraman series. They brought back the original actors from the 1960s and 1970s. Before the screening was an episode of Ultraman Ace. At 8:00PM was Shin Ultraman. Hideaki Anno's excellent work and tribute to his nostalgia. Before the screening was the part 2 episode of Ultraman Ace that was shown before the previous screening.

[Tags\|concert, fandom, video games]This weekend, July 14-16, is MAGWest 2023. It was at the San Jose Double Tree again. The logo theme this year was Splatoon since Splatoon 3 released. I just went Saturday. Music guests included The Living Tombstone, Super Soul Bros., Crash Faster, Alice Knows Karate, Da Rap Nerd, and Aniclover. Aniclover does dance remixes of anime songs.

OffKai Expo gen 2 (day 2)	[Jun. 18th, 2023\|01:40 am]Mato
[Tags\|#offkaiexpo, convention, fandom, vtuber]Saturday, June 17, 2023 was day 2 of OffKai Expo Gen 2. #OffKaiExpo Just like yesterday, there were delays and technical problems everywhere. Many events ere at least half an hour behind and some 1-2 hours behind schedule. First was the Idol Corp. panel with the members of Idol EN gen 2 Endless. Next was Wompin Q&A with Shylily. Numi appeared in the question line to tease Shylily. After that was the Vshojo panel called Hot Take With Cute Maids with Haruka Caribou and Zentreya. The next event was Numi's first concert. But technical problems with the sound and the concert had to be cancelled as well as the steam. She was going to come out on stage in person at the end as a surprise but was forced to do it early because otherwise there would be no show. The Cosplay Showcase was next. It included some vtubers cosplaying as themselves, like Sinder going on stage in person with the cosplay she showed on Twitter. The beg event and highlight of the night was the OffKai Live 2023 concert. It was preceded by the OffKai Community Choir singing vtuber songs. Riro Ron of Idol EN was first, covering Barbie Girl and then singing two of her originals. Then she sang a song of Irene from Project Nova, covered Ren Zotto's orginal song, then sang 3 more of her original songs. Isla Coleman of Production Kawaii covered Bad Apple, a song from Bocchi the Rock, then a cover of Envy. Nina Saotome covered a song from Guilty Crown and one more song. Jelly Hoshiumi of Phase Connect covered Unravel, then covered Cruel Angel's Thesis, then sang her original song Luminary. Chikafuji Lisa sang her original song A New Kind of Love, a cover of ESPer, and a cover of Stellar Stellar. The finale of the night was Ironmouse. She was already doing an unarchived karaoke stream as part of her subathon and steamed her own performace as part of it. She sang a cover of Stay With Me, a cover of Ichiban Takaramono, a cover of No Me Queda Mas, a cover of Part of Your World, a cover of Just Breathe (?), a cover of And I Am Telling You I'm No Going. She is a great singer and her performance alone was worth it. The AniKura (Anime Club) Dance Party was the end of the night. When arrived at the convention, went to the Community Stage sponsored and operated by Wonderverse. They were using the Wonderverse app tech to have vtubers interact virtually with the audience. Ashelia Rinkou of Phase Connect was on. Went to the Professor Lando panel. Went back to the Wonderverse Community Stage to see Himemiya Rie of Phase Connect. Went to the panel for Idol Corp. EN for their gen 1 E-Sekai Q&A. Stayed in the main stage hall for the Nijisanji EN Obsydia Q&A panel with Rosemi Lovelock, Selen Tatsuki, and Petra Gurin. They didn't sing like Lazulight did last year. That night went to see the Wet Stream Offline with lewdtuber Lillybelle. At the end she gave out towels that had My Favorite Cum Rag printed on them. lol. Saw some of the Idol EN music performance panel with performances of their new talents streamed. Played binbo in Onigiri's Bingopalooza panel. It was rigged so everyone won. Finished the night with Spaghetti Gang Riots panel. Spaghettig Gang are vtubers HeavenlyFather, SaltyJub, Kaabhal, CottontailVA. ---- MERCHANDISE: - Conventon T-shirt. - some Phase Connect decals from Luwudco. - Nijicomfy stickers by Melinminty. - Decals, dice and metal cards from MuuMuu.

BABS Con 2022	[Apr. 15th, 2022\|11:55 pm]Mato
[Tags\|convention, fandom]This weekend, from Friday April 15 through Sunday April 17 is BABS Con 2022. The Bay Area Brony Spectacular. The theme this year is space (as in outer space). This weekend is also the second Cherry Blossom Festival weekend in San Francisco Japantown. I went to BABS Con today but I can't go the rest of the days. This weekend is also Sakura Con in Seattle, WA. I have friends going to that. I have to say it feels different this year compared to before. Not being able to have one for two years in a row due to COVID is a factor but the fandom going down due to the change from generation 4 to generation 5 is another. I wonder if I'll be interested in going next year. I could also be that it was Friday and not Saturday? For whatever reason, this year didn't seem quite as fun as past years. I'm actually looking forward to OffKai Expo more in two weeks. The first thing I did after registration was go to the voice actor panel. Then a panel on playing pony characters in D&D. Watched the Hooves Line Is It Anyway improv show. It was funny. Went to the Vendor HAll and bought merchandise. Also went and got the official show merchandise. Went to a Silverquill panel. I tried to go to David Silver's Ponyfinder game but it was cancelled due to lack of players. It was a campaign he made himself called Under The Bay Bridge. I was looking forward to it. It's kind of sad. Previously, there was no problem getting players. In fact, there would be too many players and extra tables would have to be set up. There is streaming through YouTube and activity and streaming over the BABScon discord channel. Fanime Con was cancelled (or "postponed") this year and that makes me very sad. I expect just about every convention I care about to be cancelled this year. Maybe Crunchyroll Expo will happen if we are lucky as it happens later in the year.
