Vaccination can support healthy ageing and help reduce morbidity, mortality, and loss of quality of life associated with VPDs. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, many countries, including the UK, fail to reach recommended coverage levels. Psychosocial factors are recognised as providing important insights into the determinants of vaccination uptake. Little research has sought to establish psychometrically sound scales of vaccine attitudes with older adults. In the present study, a total of 372 UK-based participants (65-92 years, M = 70.5 yrs, SD = 4.6) completed a cross-sectional, online survey measuring health and socio-demographic characteristics in relation to vaccination uptake for influenza, pneumococcal and shingles. Two recently developed vaccination attitude scales, the 5C scale and the Vaccination Attitudes Examination (VA...

Research paper thumbnail of Psychological distress and suicidality: investigating the role of perfectionism and autobiographical memory in a sample of deliberate self-harmers

Psychiatria Danubina, 2006

On the basis of two psychological models of suicide (Escape from Self; Baumeister, 1990; Cry of Pain, Williams, 1997), this study investigated an integrative model involving the relationship between perfectionism, motivation (behavioural inhibition/adaptation systems, BIS/BAS), and autobiographical memory recall to predict psychological distress (hopelessness, depression/anxiety, suicide ideation). Methodology: 40 patients who had been admitted to a west of Scotland hospital following an episode of deliberate self-harm participated in the study and were followed up 6 weeks later. The patients completed the Autobiographical Memory Task and were assessed on measures of hopelessness, depression/anxiety, suicidality, perfectionism, and motivation at Time 1. They completed measures of suicidality and distress at Time 2. Results and Discussion: Hierarchical regression analyses showed that socially prescribed perfectionism interacted with over-general recall of both positive and negative memories to predict changes in psychological distress/suicide ideation. In addition perfectionism both mediated and moderated the relationship between BIS and psychological distress. The theoretical and clinical implications are discussed. Language: en

Continued theory development is a critical step toward designing effective prevention.Aims:The present study tested a novel element to suicide theory, the Desire for Control, for its direct and moderating roles within the Integrated Motivational-Volitional (IMV) Model of Suicidal Behavior.Method:An online-administered cross-sectional suicide risk survey study ( n = 116) was conducted among adults living in the United Kingdom. Results:Mean suicidal ideation scores were in the non-clinical range. DOC Leadership and Destiny Control were associated with good mental health. DOC Decision Avoidance was associated with poor mental health. DOC Decision Avoidance also acted as a motivational moderator in which the entrapment-suicidal thinking link was worse among those high in decisional avoidance. Conclusion:DOC represents a novel, valuable addition to suicide theory and may inform suicide-specific psychotherapeutic...

Research paper thumbnail of The Role of Primary Appraisals in the Relationship between Peer Victimisation and Psychological Wellbeing in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review

The relationship between peer-victimisation and psychological wellbeing is now well established, however the mechanisms through which peer victimisation relates to wellbeing have received comparably little research attention. Therefore the aim of this systematic review is to examine studies that have explored the relationship between peer victimisation, primary appraisal and psychological wellbeing in children and adolescents. Methods: Literature databases were searched for studies exploring the relationship between peer victimisation, aspects of primary appraisal and psychological wellbeing in children and adolescents. Findings: Twelve studies were included in the review and suggest that primary appraisal can ...

Research paper thumbnail of Examining the relationship between suicide bereavement and self-harm among adolescents in Scotland

Introduction: Suicidal and self-harming behaviours (SSHBs) are a leading cause of death in young ... more Introduction: Suicidal and self-harming behaviours (SSHBs) are a leading cause of death in young people and are a major public health concern worldwide. Various studies suggest that exposure to suicide may increase risk of engagement in SSHBs. Yet, little is known about this experience of “suicide survivorship” in adolescents. Given that self-harm is a significant predictor of completed suicide, there is an urgent need for research identifying potential risk factors for self-harm in this population. Aim: The primary aims of this investigation are to: (1) assess the incidence of bereavement by suicide and other causes among Scottish adolescents, and (2) employ a theoretical framework to help conceptualise why experiences of losing a loved one to suicide may lead to greater risk of SSHBs. Methods: Pupils 12-17 years of age in secondary schools have been invited to take part in a self-report questionnaire at two time points (6 months apart), assessing their experiences with bereavement...

Aims: Using a recommended suicide measurement approach for epidemiological studies (i.e. the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire–Revised (SBQ-R)), the present investigation assessed United Kingdom young adult suicide prevalence rates. This study also investigated the utility of a Preferences in Information Processing (PIP) model of suicide in identifying those at increased odds for elevated suicide risk, as well as lifetime ideation and attempt. Method: A cross-sectional mental health and well-being survey study ( n = 414) was conducted. Results: The prevalence rates of elevated risk (49.8%), lifetime ideation only (55.3%) and lifetime attempt (13.5%) were high. Bivariate associations demonstrated that elevated depression, anxiety and Need for Affect (NFA) Avoidance were associated with worsened suicide outcomes, whereas elevated Need for Cognition (NFC) was...

Research paper thumbnail of Young People’s Coping Strategies When Dealing With Their Own and a Friend’s Symptoms of Poor Mental Health: A Qualitative Study

Journal of Adolescent Research, 2021

Young people struggle to seek help for their mental health, despite having different resources av... more Young people struggle to seek help for their mental health, despite having different resources available. As the coping process is very complex, and elements such as trust and availability of resources have been said to influence it, this study aimed to understand how young people cope with their own or a friend’s symptoms of poor mental health. Eleven young people (13–15 years old) were interviewed. Thematic Analysis of the interviews showed that participants reported different coping strategies for dealing with their own hypothetical symptoms and those of a friend. Participants identified the social impact of experiencing symptoms of poor mental health and choice of resources as the main factors influencing their coping strategies. For their own symptoms, young people expressed concern about being judged and that they would only disclose to someone they trust. Participants would not disclose a friend’s symptoms because they did not want to break their trust. Finally, choice of res...
