The role of social media in disaster response and recovery is becoming more and more prominent, a... more The role of social media in disaster response and recovery is becoming more and more prominent, as it was seen during and after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the 2012 Hurricane Sandy in the USA, and a great number of crisis events ever since. Social media platforms are also increasingly used by a variety of actors—from ordinary residents, to local and international organizations, governments, and traditional media outlets—to a different degree and to different effects. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube and others are now among the primary means for information dissemination, mapping and sending instant reports, organizing volunteers and help groups, connecting with family members, and donation gathering. Nonetheless, some concerns over personal data privacy, “fake” news, scams, misinformation and difficulties in outreach to older populations have also been identified. This chapter will provide a brief overview of the available literature on the role of social media for disaster management, and the types, uses, benefits and potential threats and challenges. A review of relevant case studies is included to identify some good and bad practices and derive lessons learnt. Finally, the chapter will pinpoint some key takeaway messages for practitioners and policy-makers in an attempt to chart the way forward.

In this paper the research surrounding the Augmented Reality in games on Android platform was per... more In this paper the research surrounding the Augmented Reality in games on Android platform was performed by testing 108 games from Google Play Market and by analyzing the hundreds of user reviews to determine the level of acceptance and the level of technical stability of the mobile games based on that technology. The Location-based, Marker-based and games based on somewhat different approach were studied and compared by the runtimes, game genres and by the featuring aspects including the presence of multiplayer mode, sound effects and the dimension that the virtual objects were positioned in. The overview of the studied games was presented in this paper. The results, for instance, include that the AR game variation is very narrow in terms of gameplay style and technical issues are very commonly encountered and it makes them very influential to the gameplay experience. Provision of an accurate and timely disaster relief effort requires an insightful informational c... more Provision of an accurate and timely disaster relief effort requires an insightful informational coverage of a crisis situation. Social media has a potential of providing a large amount of information generated by people about different aspects of a certain crisis situation. However, emergency-oriented social media utilization is still at an embryonic stage of its understanding. So, in this report 10 research studies were reviewed in an attempt to gain some understanding about this approach. As it appeared, crowdsourced information allows to get a versatile and insightful understanding of a crisis situation, but, as with any Big Data, there are major challenges of making use of high volumes of diverse information, in terms of extraction and representation of relevant and accurate information. Furthermore, other research studies proposed extraction/representation techniques which were primarily aimed at thematic and geographical clustering of information. As it appeared from the real cases of social media application during emergencies, there is still no standardized approach on how such information can be handled, but in those cases, emergency responders still managed to successfully apply their own methods of primarily geographical and thematic clustering of information, while still being greatly challenged by overwhelming amount of user-generated information. Thus, the success could perhaps be explained by social media being used primarily as a complement/enhancement of other already proved to be effective techniques. Further exploration would be needed in order to gain a more complete understanding of the current state emergency-oriented social media utilization, which could later be used as a theoretical framework for a new research study in this area.
The Internet threats can affect anyone and even cause tremendous financial damage to organization... more The Internet threats can affect anyone and even cause tremendous financial damage to organizations or even countries, while the mitigation of such threats can be very difficult, considering the highly sophisticated nature of attacks that can be created not necessarily by regular hackers for profitability purposes, but by countries for satisfaction of national interests. A cyber-attack can be initiated against critical entities, which could have a Cascadian effect on a variety of its internal and external elements, due to the complexity of such entities and their interconnectivity. The constantly emerging threats result in an inability to produce a universal security solution. The Complex Adaptive systems can help to better identify the relationships between different systems in highly complex infrastructures, while the Game Theory can help to dig into the essence of relationships with and motives of potential attackers, in order to better understand how to protect against them and to address the security more efficiently.
In this work, the description of the field study, which was conducted in a primary school in Mosc... more In this work, the description of the field study, which was conducted in a primary school in Moscow, is described. The pre-study of the context with regard to the non-school usage of ICT solutions by children as well as the ICT readiness of the teachers in that school was conducted. Then, the already existing ICT solutions were overviewed in order to determine how it is used during the lessons. The introduction of several ICT solutions that were previously unused in this school was done based on the consultations from several teachers in other schools. And finally, the review of the personal experience that was received from conducting this study was presented to get an overview of the general progression of this study and what aspects of it were valuable for personal development within the area of ICT implementation in school. In general, the purpose of this field study was to make the usage of the available ICT solutions more efficient both for the teachers and pupils at that school.

The prevention of usage of unwanted keyboard combinations, potentially malicious USB devices and preservation of confidentiality and integrity of data by encrypting the hard disk, restricting access to certain application, while maintaining the centralized management capabilities over the devices for the administrators, are some of the security measures that could achieve the proper level of information security.

The access users have to applications has to be defined carefully, but it’s also important to define the access those applications might have to the system’s resources as well as to provide applications with a set of special rules that would enable them to protect themselves. Furthermore, to increase the security of the system and prevent potential leakage of confidential information, it’s possible to strengthen the most security-sensitive parts of an application decreasing its general vulnerability and thus increasing the security of users’ data.

In this research a survey was performed among the students of Department of Computer and Systems ... more In this research a survey was performed among the students of Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) at Stockholm University (Sweden) and the students at the Department of Computer Science and Telecommunications (DCST) at National Research University of Electronic Technology (Russia). The research aimed at exploring the difference in acceptance rate of the e-learning platform as part of the education by the students in two different countries. Some of the findings were that the largest proportion of DCST students never previously used any e-learning software before coming to the university, while the students in both DSV and DCST prefer the traditional face-to-face communication with the teachers. It was also noted that there is a significant difference in the teachers’ proficiency in using the e-learning software as part of the educational program in University two departments, where the DCST had a much lower rate of support of online-based education compared to DSV.

In terms of AAA, the full disk encryption provides a secure procedure of gaining access to the data. When it comes to CIA, even though the data is under hardly-bypassable protection, it is not prone to unauthorized modifications, which violates the integrity of the data while keeping its confidentiality preserved. Thus, it’s important to take precautions and back up the data even if the full drive is encrypted as well as not to leave the computer unattended.
