Note: Membership to this community is currently by approval only - If you'd like to join feel free to click the join link up top and your membership will be approved within 24 hours probably. This in NO way has anything to do with elitism. It was unfortunately needed to keep idiots from joining for the pure sake of bashing the members of this community for their beliefs. We are not intolerant of people with opinions which differ from our own, and we are open for having friendly, intelligent debates with people as well, but we will not tolerate having pointless, petty insults thrown at us in our own community. That being said, on with the info...

Just because you're straight edge doesn't mean you have to be a part of the punk-rock/hardcore "scene". This community is dedicated to providing a place for all the "geeks" out there who are straight edge to communicate with each other and meet other likeminded people.

What we mean by "geeks": The word "geek" is not used as an insult in this community. It is used as a term of endearment for all of us who aren't "cool" or "normal" by those silly standards of society. It serves as a good blanket term for movie buffs, computer geeks, technology buffs, science geeks, electronic music fans, sci-fi geeks, anime fans, and all sorts of other people out there. In fact I hate to break it to you, but if you have an online journal, you are probably a geek, ;)

What "straight edge" is: The philosophy is simple. Humans should have strength, pride, dignity, honor, and self respect. They shouldn't engage in activities that are a disgrace to their minds and bodies (such as ingesting and/or becoming addicted to harmful substances for fun, or sharing your body sexually with another person when there isn't even a true emotional bond there).

History/Conflict: The term "straight edge" originated in the punk-rock/hardcore scene in the 80's, so usually if you're not into that scene and call yourself straight edge, you end up feeling like a real outsider since most everything that is straight edge-related still keeps mainly the hardcore/punk scene in mind. But it doesn't mean everyone who calls themselves straight edge has to be into this scene. That's what the point of this community is.

Who we are: We have made the choice not to have sex with people we don't love, not to drink, not to smoke, and not to do drugs. Anyone who is intelligent enough to make that choice for themselves, but doesn't think the straight edge movement should be limited to just the specific "hardcore" sub-genre of punk-rock music, is welcome to join, even if you are new to being straight edge. New straight edge people are very welcome to join because we will be happy to provide support and discussion regarding the decision. No one is better than the next person here because we have all made the same choice on how to live our lives.

Please do not post:
1. Reviews or advertisements for punk-rock/hardcore shows, bands, cds, or websites (not because this community is against that type of music, but just because you can already get plenty of that in all the other sxe communities)
2. Posts that specifically bad-mouth punk-rock/hardcore. This community is NOT about being AGAINST the punk-rock/hardcore scene! It's just about seperating the right to call yourself "straight edge" AWAY from it.

If it is found that any member of this community is in fact not who they say they are, or do not meet the requirements for membership, they will of course be banned. We don't need fakes here.

Requirements for membership:
1. That you ARE in fact straight edge. This is not something to take lightly. You can't just call yourself straight edge and then drink every once and awhile. There are NO exceptions. Either you live your life this way or you don't. Simple.
2. That you do NOT believe that you have to be into any specific type of music or fashion to call yourself straight edge.
3. That you do not dedicate your life to the hardcore/punk-rock scene, and are open to many other kinds of music, forms of fashion, and "scenes".

For more information:
Straight-Edge.org - I feel this is the best site for straight edge because it concentrates very much on what this community is about instead of concentrating on the punk-rock/hardcore scene.
Straight-Edge.com - This site focuses more on straight edge as part of the hardcore music scene, but also has a lot of information on the history of the term.
