Overall, Ian Jack claims that Macquarie had a critical role in planning 11 towns in New South Wales and two in Tasmania.* There has been research into the origins and nature of the designs for key Macquarie buildings and of the landscaping of the Domain.' In contrast, there has been little research into the origins of the town plans used for the five Macquarie Towns, other than to dismiss them because their grid form is regarded as uninspiring. However, the recent controversial proposal to construct a bridge and access road through Thompson Square in Windsor has brought the design of the Macquarie Towns into focus, with many claims made about the nature and genius of his township designs. This paper is a brief look at the Macquarie Towns and the possible influences on their design. It speculates on the role of the creation of towns in Macquarie's exercise of his governorship and further looks at Macquarie's ties to the Scottish Enlightenment.

The paper outlines a brief history of the wheat industry in NSW and then focuses on changes to land law, genetics, farming technology and transportation as factors in the industry rapidly developing to be a major export industry and the creation of an industrial landscape. Finally it looks at heritage listings and concludes that they are not systematic and representative of the importance of the wheat industry to NSW and Australia.

The Final Report, was an investigation into the re-establishment of the location of the main grave site of the victims of the wreck of the Cataraqui off the west coast of King Island in 1845 (Australia's worst maritime disaster). The victim's grave sites been lost over time, bur the originally 'fenced' main gave was, lost as well.

In the Final Report the case was put foreword that perhaps the wreck
should not have occurred in the first place, being the ironic victim of the
economy and technology at that period of rapid change in the early
nineteenth century.

The early part of the final report looked to describing the setting and circumstances by which the Cataraqui and its passengers
were to come to grief in such a horrible manner. It then went on to
describe the historical evidence and existing evidence that led to the
findings.
The report describes the use and function of remote sensing and
geophysical prospecting as a tool !o archaeological investigation, using
dead reckoning in the first instance, and then the application of electronic instruments, the magnetometer, gradiometre, and resisitivity meter for investigating the potential presence of sub surface anomalies, namely the mass grave of some two hundred six individuals.

The intention of this surrey was to extend the findings from the recon to a site specific location and there, through test bores, determine if there was. in fact. a grave at that position. It was also our intention not to excavate or exhume any of the victims if thee burial site was confirmed but to only establish. within reasonable certainty, the existence and location of the main grave. This survey exercise is specifically undertaken to support. with evidence d documentation, a tangible location in preparation for a memorial and celebration of the l50rh anniversary of the event of the disaster. to be held in 1995.

Often simply called Nissen Huts, many of the older generation would have slept, ate, were taught or possibly been conceived in such a hut. They were common features of military bases, migrant camps, hospitals and educational institutions. However recent research has shown that not much is known about the huts and that there is a need for some more precise accounts of their types and variety.

The aim of the paper is not to provide a definitive account of the Nissen and similar semi-circular huts but to provide information on the nature of the huts, how to distinguish between the various types and to make some preliminary comments on the occurrence of the types in Australia. It is hoped that this modest amount of research will be of use to heritage consultants faced with a semi-circular building to assess.

More often it is a series of interrelated sites across a wide landscape that contain evidence of how the factors of production were organised, brought to a place where they were transformed into goods and services and from there distributed to their market, leaving waste and landscape change. The term ‘industrial landscape’ will be familiar to many as a way of referring to an area larger than an individual industrial place (such as a factory site) but less in spatial scale than a region.

It is useful to study the industrial landscape to understand the full historical scope of an industry or a locus of industries and, therefore, fully appreciate their heritage values. This brief discussion attempts to cover the methods for identifying industrial landscapes and touches on many concepts for which there is a great deal of literature but which cannot be fully discussed in a book such as this.
