The implementation of learner-centered instruction (LCI) paradigm is closely related to the roles... more The implementation of learner-centered instruction (LCI) paradigm is closely related to the roles of teachers and students in the classroom. roles that are run by the teachers and students contribute to the successful implementation of LCI. in fact, LCI is still not going well, especially in MAN Kota Solok. indication suggests that the problems encountered in the implementation of the LCI are closely related to the way teachers and students in implementing their roles. this article discusses the implementation of the respective roles of teachers and students in MAN Solok. In addition, this article also discusses the problems arise in the implementation of LCI and its causes.

As intercultural competence is a part of communicative competence, it is categorized significant to involve this competence in English teaching classroom since English students are expected to be able to communicate fluently, correctly and acceptable. Thus, the students should be provided with such abilities that can encourage them to be better in English.

Gender is believed to be one of factors that influence verbal aptitude and numerical aptitude. Ho... more Gender is believed to be one of factors that influence verbal aptitude and numerical aptitude. However, nowadays there are findings which reveal and seem breaking this belief. This research was conducted to prove the concepts related to gender in relation to the verbal aptitude and also numerical aptitude. The data of the research were collected from 633 respondents who are male and female. The research was used non parametric test by using U-test which found Sig 2 tailed 0,846 on verbal aptitude and 0,081 on numerical aptitude. The results of this study is there is no significant difference among verbal aptitude and numerical aptitude on male and female. Furthermore, it is assumed that the concept related to the difference of verbal and numerical aptitude cannot be generalized and it could be appeared on certain culture only.

Group work as one of teaching techniques on the framework of communicative approach is believed t... more Group work as one of teaching techniques on the framework of communicative approach is believed to be an effective model for building students' communicative competence. The process of applying this technique needs high skills of management of the English teacher. The English teacher has autonomy to plan and implement the group work in order to achieve an objective of EFL learning. Because of that, the English teacher has a responsibility to make any decisions and actions for assuring the success of EFL learning. The teachers' management in planning and implementing group work influenced the success of this teaching technique. This article, which is derived and further developed based on research conducted in 2013, analyzes and discusses the way the teachers plan and implement group work for the success of EFL learning. This research was done at MAN Kota Solok as one of Islamic senior high school in Solok city. The research was conducted in terms of qualitative research by involving 3 English teachers at MAN kota Solok. The research found that the teachers still need some guidance and improvements in planning and implementing group work for students at MAN Kota Solok.

Teaching English is identical to teaching the students being good at grammar that finally aims to... more Teaching English is identical to teaching the students being good at grammar that finally aims to be able to communicate well in English. However, being good at communication means the students are not only good at producing sentences which are grammatically correct, but should also be able to produce acceptable sentences. One of the indicators that influence the acceptability of a language produced is cultural contents which are linked on the language used. Thus, it is really important for the educators to not only teach the student about the grammar, but also involve the intercultural competence, as a competence that deals with the cultural values that are integrated on the language. This paper is a research-based paper that investigates how the lecturers at English Education study program of IAIN Bukittinggi involve intercultural competence in English classes, especially for oral communication. The research was conducted through qualitative method in terms of case study design. The result deals to the way the lecturers involve intercultural competence in the classrooms and some problems during the process of involving this competence in oral communication.

The research is due to several problems found in the field; the students assumed that narrative t... more The research is due to several problems found in the field; the students assumed that narrative text was the difficult text to translate. It happened because the students translate the text literally, also the students were lack of vocabularies in translating the text. This research aims to find out the causes of students' problems in translating narrative text. The research used descriptive method with a quantitative approach in which the sample of the research was 55 fifth semester students of English Education Study Program at IAIN Bukittinggi, academic year 2018/2019, by using questionnaires as the instrument of this research. The findings of the research showed that there are two factors causing problems in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian; they are linguistic factors and non-linguistic factors. It is proved by the highest percentage of students' difficulties which is 55% in linguistic factors and 52% in non-linguistic factors.

Teaching EFL ideally is not only about teaching language but also teaching culture. It is based on a common premise in which these two parts are interrelated; the language is a part of the culture and the culture is a part of the language. Thus, teachers as language practitioners are supposed to be promoters of multicultural perspectives. The teachers are demanded to encourage the learners to be aware of culture while using English. Since many problems appeared in the real life because of misunderstanding of such cultural aspects, teaching culture for the learners is determined important. Therefore, the teachers have a role to teach and guide the students to tolerant of cultural conflict, to respect diverse culture, to avoid stereotyping others, and to develop materials of cross cultural. This paper, which is derived and further developed based on research conducted in 2013, discusses and analyzes English teachers' points of view related to their role as promoter of multicultural perspectives and its impact on students' progress in learning English.

this study aims to determine the correlation among students' Grade Point Average (GPA) to their c... more this study aims to determine the correlation among students' Grade Point Average (GPA) to their comprehensive test scores at faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training (FTIK) IAIN Bukittinggi. This research is a correlational research by using a quantitative approach. The population of this research was the graduates on generation X of FTIK IAIN Bukittinggi in 2019 totaling 211 people. The research samples were 28 people which determined by cluster random sampling technique. The data in this study were students' GPA and their comprehensive test scores for generation X FTIK IAIN Bukittinggi in 2019. By using product moment correlation analysis, a significant score is obtained among grade point average with a comprehensive test score that is 0.26361 where r = 0, 26361 and obtained a coefficient of determination that is 6,95%. The results showed that there is a correlation between grade point average with the comprehensive exam scores of FTIK IAIN Bukittinggi.

Teaching English cannot be generally taught in the same ways to different students who have diffe... more Teaching English cannot be generally taught in the same ways to different students who have different backgrounds. Each student may have different purposes, learning styles, needs, interest and so on that may affect their successful in learning English. Students' backgrounds may influence their comprehension in analyzing such contexts in a real communication. In this case, English teachers are supposed to gather information related to their students' backgrounds. This information later can be used by the teachers to develop learning materials, teaching techniques, and so on. Shortly, it may help the teachers to give directions in conducting teaching and learning processes by considering the context the language used. Related to this case, at least, there are 4 main points that should be considered by the teachers in EFL class; students' needs, students' interest, students' behavior, and students' social background. This paper is discussed about teachers' performance as an information gatherer and its influence on teaching and learning processes in the classroom. This paper, which is derived and further developed based on the research done in 2013, was a kind of phenomenological research. The data of the research were qualitative data that were collected through observation and interview.
