ISSUES OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

The increased globalization of the economy and the interaction of different cultures was a reason for the concept of world culture to emerge. It is an idea that traditional barriers among people of different cultures will break down the traditional barriers among people. Intercultural communication takes place between nations and governments rather than individual to individual and it is quite formal and ritualized. Thus successful communication depends on shared cultural norms. The concept of interculturalization emphasizes communication as the primary goal of language learning, sees culture and language as closely linked; recognizes that culture is always present when language is used, sees cultural skills as important as language skills in language learning. When the communication takes place between people of different cultures and they share a common language, things can certainly go wrong. Moreover speaking the language does not mean that you have the background knowledge that native speakers assume you have. The issues of IC such as barriers in communication, stereotypes, ethnocentrism, culture shock and conflicts will be discussed in this study in terms of English language teaching. Key words: intercultural communication, ELT, globalization, foreign language, teaching.

A Teaching Unit for Intercultural Communicative Competence

Estudios de lingüística aplicada IV, 2020

Since Canale and Swain’s (1980) model of Communicative Competence, during the last decades the construct has evolved in a much more complex idea where culture plays the main role. Although it has been defined in several ways, this new concept is commonly known as Intercultural Communicative Competence. Authors such has Byram (1997), Kim (2001), and Fantini (2005) have proposed their models of ICC, which have in common the importance of acting appropriately and effectively in a specific culture, as well as being aware of the difficulties that facing a new culture may imply. The concept of culture has usually been disregarded in foreign language teaching, but thanks to these authors, it is increasingly becoming more relevant in the foreign language class, thus, making linguists and teachers reflect on the best way to implement the culture element in the syllabus. Therefore, we propose a teaching unit that aims at fostering interculturality and developing students’ ICC, taking advantage of the great cultural diversity of the class where it has been implemented. This proposal has been carried out in a 2nd year class of the primary school C.E.I.P. Villar Palasí at Burjassot (Valencia), and after the put in practice of it, students have accomplished a questionnaire that we designed. Results show that they felt enthusiastic while learning about their peers’ cultural habits and sharing their own. Therefore, we suggest that further research on how to include culture in the FL class should be conducted.

Language is as means of intercultural communications at the English lessons

In the globalizing world, there is a growing interest in the problem of English as a means of interethnic communication and intercultural communication. Language is an attribute of social life; it is of great importance for the younger generation and young people for the purpose of cognition, upbringing, education and communication in the twenty-first century. Using the knowledge of the historical process that influenced the formation of English as a link in the study of phonetics, vocabulary and grammar will help students demonstrate a conscious perception of the structure of modern English, rooted in the depths of centuries. When teaching the language at school or university, it is necessary to develop skills and abilities of schoolchildren and students to observe, remember, identify language phenomena and establish historical links between them which contributes to a more thoughtful memorization of the phonetic, grammatical and lexical aspects of the formation of modern English. In the opinion of the authors, all this is an important factor in the consideration of language as a means of intercultural communication in English classes in both secondary and higher schools.
