Eco especially focuses on Maritain’s faithfulness to the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and he challenges the French philosopher’s efforts to extend the Saint’s thought towards the Twentieth-century poetics. This article examines Eco’s critique of the definition of pulchrum as id quod visum placet provided by Maritain. In conclusion, it is demonstrated
that Eco does not consider the entire development of Maritain’s thought and judges it too severely, on the basis of an anti-intuitionist prejudice.
