The Chronicles of Prydain
by Lloyd Alexander
The Chronicles of Prydain is a series of five books (there is an additional book with other stories relating to Prydain) revolving around an assistant pig-keeper turned hero named Taran, his companions, and their fight against Arawn, Lord of Annuvin. Together they quest for the sake of Prydain, their homeland. Taran grows in the series to understand that being a hero is not all gold and triumph, it very often involves sacrifice and pain.

"But . . . but . . .," Taran stammered. "Coll? A hero? But . . . he's so bald!"
Gwydion laughed and shook his head. "Assistant Pig-Keeper," he said. "You have curious notions about heroes. I have never known courage to be judged by the length of a man's hair. Or, for the matter of that, whether he has any hair at all."
