this article analyzes Patrick imbert's The Summit of the Gods (2021), which functions as a notewo... more this article analyzes Patrick imbert's The Summit of the Gods (2021), which functions as a noteworthy example of animated sports film. as a result, the study of this animated film on climbing and of the authorial decisions made by Patrick imbert and his collaborators is located at the intersection of several fields, which include the history of sport manga, the sociology of extreme sports, the philosophy of self-transcendence, as well as the literary (de)construction of transmedia storytelling. consequently, the need to employ various sources becomes manifest in order to aptly frame the multiple significations present in both the form and the content of the film: the historical account of George Mallory's and andrew irvine's ascent, the playful comparisons between manga and animation, the director's personal commentaries as well as the film's reception and critique.

Abstract According to sport literature specialist Pierre Charreton, the interwar period in France... more Abstract According to sport literature specialist Pierre Charreton, the interwar period in France witnessed the culmination of fictional writings dedicated to sporting disciplines, part of which is the genre of boxing fiction. Through the examination of two recovered novels, Henri Decoin’s Quinze Rounds (1930) and Alfred Menguy’s Gueules Aplaties (1933), I demonstrate that boxing fiction complicates ideas of heroism, violence, and suffering, thus operating as an unexpected outlet for the traumatic experiences suffered by French society during World War I. After establishing meliorative connections between boxers and soldiers based on their shared heroism and courage, the two authors recast the idealized perception of masculine strength usually typified by both figures. Soon undermined by suffering and trauma, the fictional pugilists of Decoin and Menguy begin to mirror the wounded soldiers of the Great War and expose the taboo surrounding trauma and masculinity post-WWI. In Quinze Rounds and Gueules Aplaties, the presence of fallen pugilists echoes that of fallen soldiers and challenge the reader to face what can be seen as French society’s larger coping mechanisms, those of avoidance and amnesia, when faced with the memories of the Great War and its distressing aftermath.

Indeed, Yates’ film focuses on the story of Dave Blase, a Hoosier who competed in the Little 500 cycling race during his time at Indiana University. By completing 139 of the 200 laps by himself, the student brought the victory to his fraternity, the Phi Kappa Psi. Of course, if the film respects the location – the shooting was entirely conducted in Bloomington – it changes the time period by fifteen years, switching from 1962 to 1978. More central to our study, this biopic immerses the spectator back in the rural universe of 1970s’ America, with a particular emphasis on the pervasive violence, real and symbolic, between classes – especially those between the towners or ‘cutters’ and the elite studying at Indiana University. By replacing this biographical film in its political context, by underscoring its cultural universe and the social values on its era, this article strives to decipher – beyond the simple aes...
