The methods known from aeronautical and automotive industry such as concurrent engineering have often been referred to as possible way for radical process improvement of AEC industry, however the implementation of the so called integrated building design (IBD) in the planning practice has not succeeded yet. This paper will present the results of the multiple case study research of best-practice planning processes for five energy efficient buildings, with aim to determine the success factors, optimization potentials and deficits of the processes. The findings identify the early evolvement of stakeholders, interdisciplinary, simultaneous collaboration and transparency in communication and information as success factors. The findings were verified in the practitioners' workshop, where as particularly important step for the implementation, the change of fee structure for architects and engineers (FSAE) and scope of services were identified.

Although challenges for energy efficient renovation are similar in many countries contextual differences create varying possibilities and barriers for actions. We present a comparative study of managerial practices regarding refurbishment of housing in Austria and Sweden, countries with large stocks of publicly built, owned and managed housing. Due to what we have identified as socio-technical traditions of the welfare state, rather distinct renovation strategies are applied. We conclude that a more reflective approach to refurbishment that coordinates policy for housing and sustainability with detailed knowledge of the stock and its socio-technical context is a way forward.

ABSTRACT The early building design phases play crucial role for the determination of building&amp... more ABSTRACT The early building design phases play crucial role for the determination of building's life cycle performance in terms of resources and energy consumption and development of LCC (life cycle costs). In this stage the optimization potential is still very large, at very low cost. In the latter planning phases the change possibility rapidly decreases with simultaneously increasing costs. The investors and planners are increasingly requiring design tools as decision support instruments, which would enable simulation and optimization of LCC already in the early planning phases. This paper will present a comparative study of three commercial software-tools for LCC-calculation, and test their fitness for the implementation in the early design phases. Using a Case Study of an energy efficient building, LCC were assessed employing the three tools and the deviations of the results were compared. The analysis showed, that the tested tools cannot be employed in the early design phases without adoption and customization, lacking of benchmarks and extensive data representing the largest problem for a reliable LCC calculation and optimization. In further step, a strategy for investors for the assessment of LCC in the architectural competitions as decision support was developed and verified on a real-life project.

This paper focuses on life-cycle based renovation strategies considering not only structural and thermal refurbishment, but also the social aspects of an ageing society needs, as well as a preservation of cultural heritage. For a case study of a specific housing block of the Red Vienna historic period, several refurbishment variants were developed and evaluated in a quantitative as well as qualitative way for the economic (life cycle costs and yields), ecologic (CO2 emissions) and socio-cultural impacts (monument protection, accessibility, assisted living). According to the research, there are great potentials in structural refurbishment of the building stock for support of assisted living models. These prove to be substantially more cost efficient than the institutional care, providing a better comfort for the inhabitants, as well as the necessary social mix by a trans-generation housing in the social housing facilities.

2014 Workshop on Modeling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (MSCPES), 2014

ABSTRACT To meet the increasing requirements of sustainable production and to assure economic com... more ABSTRACT To meet the increasing requirements of sustainable production and to assure economic competitiveness, novel strategic approaches are necessary in designing production systems and to increase energy efficiency in the manufacturing industry. Individual areas within production facilities (e.g. production system, energy system, building hull) can be analyzed individually by using simulation-based methods. In order to access additional optimization potential, it is necessary to expand the boundaries of such simulations and to consider dynamic interactions between individual optimization fields. This work presents an approach for an interdisciplinary co-simulation, in which, for an overall integrated simulation, several simulation environments are coupled that periodically exchange data quasi-parallel at runtime. This allows not only to combine different model descriptions, but also multiple calculation algorithms, each specifically tailored to the individual needs of the respective field of engineering. A case study of a metal-cutting production facility presents an application example. The goal is to provide a decision-support tool for the early planning stages of production facilities that allows making qualified predictions about the effect and financial impact of different energy saving measures.

The recent literature identifies the critical project delivery attributes influencing sustainable building and infrastructure project outcomes as: trust and collaboration between key project participants, their commitment to sustainability, their early involvement and contract conditions. This paper presents results of the still ongoing study which is in relatively under-researched area and examines the global perception of sustainable Construction Project Risks. The survey goals were to compare different stakeholders' evaluation of risks and stakeholders influence on project success. Risk was defined as an implication of uncertainty that could potentially impact project goals, either positively or negatively. Opposite of hypothesis, which was that different stakeholders will prioritize risk sources differently, the findings suggest there is no significant discrepancy between the perceptions of different stakeholders about the sustainable project risks.

The aims and requirements for planning of the production facilities focused mostly on the issues ... more The aims and requirements for planning of the production facilities focused mostly on the issues of flexibility and extensibility in the past. This trend however is currently being challenged through new upcoming issues such as energy efficiency and life cycle costing, which originates in diverse causes such as: the upraising uncertainty in energy supply through political dependencies, the sharpening of EU-demands considering CO 2 -reduction and lastly through growing pressure of the media and increasing public awareness for the scarceness of resources and protection of environment. The desire of investors for reduction of energy and resources consumption could lately be clearly observed. These new requirements in addition to the in industrial building well-established criteria such as low construction cost and short planning cycles represent new challenges for the planners. The development of the energy efficiency measurements should take place in the early planning stages -the retrofitting of industrial facility on the state-of-the art is due to the disturbance production process often too costly or even impossible. The planning of energy efficient industrial facilities requires numerous simulations, since energy demand and heat dissipation take place simultaneously at several levels: at the level of machine, of the production line and at the level of building and its operation. Often are the companies lacking the information or data on actual energy consumption -the measuring and systematization of energy consumption should contribute to identification of energy saving potentials and initiate implementation of energy-saving strategies as well as increase awareness for energy saving. The interdisciplinary cooperation and life-cycle oriented planning count therefore as the crucial factors within planning process with focus on energy and resources efficiency. This paper presents a Vienna University of Technology research project with such a focus, financed out of means of Climate and Energy Fond and within Program-Framework "NEUE ENERGIEN 2020"(New Energies 2020). The project INFO (Interdisciplinary Research for Energy Efficiency in Production) models and simulates electricity saving production processes, HVAC systems which use renewable energies as well as industrial waste heat, and the innovative energy producing building hulls. The final aim of the project is an integral simulation displaying and optimizing machine-production process-building interaction in terms of energy flows.
