Una lectura comparativa de los poemas inéditos de los Manuel Zapata Olivella Papers (los Papeles ... more Una lectura comparativa de los poemas inéditos de los Manuel Zapata Olivella Papers (los Papeles de Manuel Zapata Olivella en Vanderbilt University, Estados Unidos) con los que aparecen en la versión definitiva de Changó, el gran putas (1983) muestra una reestructuración del texto, en el que detalles importantes revelan la posición del autor en cuanto a que las letras cuentan tanto como las armas en el recuerdo y la liberación de la diáspora africana. Este artículo focalizará su análisis en distintas manifestaciones del rol del poeta en la sociedad: el guerrero-poeta Nagó el Navegante, los orichas Elegua y Oko y el griot Ngafúa/Bandama. La poesía en la novela representa, en cada caso, una forma distinta de arma libertadora.

En los años 1940 dos afro-latinos hemisféricos, el afro-puertorriqueño Piri Thomas y el afro-colo... more En los años 1940 dos afro-latinos hemisféricos, el afro-puertorriqueño Piri Thomas y el afro-colombiano Manuel Zapata Olivella, viajaron al Sur durante la época de las leyes discriminatorias Jim Crow y los linchamientos de negros. ¿Por qué se pusieron en peligro? Mi respuesta adapta el concepto de los “movimientos continentales” inter-americanos del crítico John D. “Río” Riofrío al contexto de Jim Crow para mostrar que el Sur norteamericano era una “zona catastrófica” a la cual viajaron estos escritores en su juventud para fortalecer sus identidades afro-latinas y su compromiso con la comunidad. Las confrontaciones de estos autores y sus protagonistas con la zona de desastre del Sur son relevantes mientras América experimenta el Nuevo Jim Crow y la época de Trump.

In fact, he is a multifaceted Afro-Diasporic thinker and novelist who has created texts that educate Brazilians about black history. The following article provides a bio-bibliography of Lopes and an analysis of how his novel Oiobome: A epopeia de uma nacao (2010) represents what I call a “Pedagogy of the Possessed,” an Afrocentrism with similarities to Paulo Freire classic book Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968). The novel proposes a “pedagogy of the possessed” to reimagine the course of Brazilian history, rooting it much less in European ideas and much more in quilombo s, religious traditions that include possessions of the faithful and other Afro-diasporic forms of creativity and resistance. Palmares and the Haitian and Cuban Revolutions inspire Lopes. This novel is particularly important in Brazil, the country with the Americas’ largest black population (GATES, 2011). The cultural phenomenon of Marianism is a defining part of Brazilian women’s experiences in priso... more The cultural phenomenon of Marianism is a defining part of Brazilian women’s
experiences in prison and therefore in nonfiction prison narratives about inmates and visitors.
This article will analyze Marianism in Joana Nin’s documentaries Visita íntima (2005) and
Cativas: presas pelo coração (2013), and in the testimonial novels Cela forte mulher (2003)
by Antônio Carlos Prado, Presos que menstruam (2015) by Nana Queiroz, and Prisioneiras
(2017) by Dráuzio Varella. These texts are part of a feminine rupture with an almost entirely
male-authored and male-centered Brazilian prison canon and literatura marginal. After a
sketch of the state of Brazilian prisons, an overview of prison literature, and an explanation
of why I have chosen Marianism as my lens to interpret these works. But women do not
passively accept it, and lesbianism is common in prison.

De fato, é um pensador afrocêntrico com muitos interesses, um romancista e um autor de textos que educam o povo brasileiro sobre a história negra. O presente ensaio proporciona um resumo bio-bibliográfico do autor e uma análise de como seu romance Oiobomé: A epopeia de uma nação (2010) representa o que pode considerar-se uma "pedagogia do possuído", um afrocentrismo com semelhanças com o livro clássico de Paulo Freire, Pedagogia do oprimido (1968). O romance propõe uma "pedagogia do possuído" para reimaginar o concurso da história brasileira, baseando-a menos em ideias europeias e muito mais em quilombos, tradições religiosas que incluem a possessão dos crentes e outras formas de criatividade e resistência afro-diaspóricas. Lopes se inspira em Palmares e as Revoluções Haitiana Cubana. Esse romance é particularmente importante para o país com a maior população negra das Américas (GATES, 2011). This article argues that Puerto Rican Alejandro Tapia y Rivera's novel Póstumo el Transmigrado is... more This article argues that Puerto Rican Alejandro Tapia y Rivera's novel Póstumo el Transmigrado is an important precursor to Machado de Assis's Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas. By placing the two works in dialogue with one another, the article shows that the common influence of Kardecist spiritism appears to be an inspiration for these authors' projects of challenging the mimetic language of their time—particularly that used in science, social Darwinism, and realist aesthetics—which was heavily influenced by the unquestionable truths of positivism.

En la novela Fe en disfraz (2009), Mayra Santos-Febres ha reescrito El laberinto de la soledad (1... more En la novela Fe en disfraz (2009), Mayra Santos-Febres ha reescrito El laberinto de la soledad (1950) de Octavio Paz en un espacio transnacional que incluye Estados Unidos, Brasil, Puerto Rico y Venezuela para hacer el estudio de la esclavitud y la identidad afro-latinoamericana pagano, corpóreo, visceral y político. Su protagonista, la historiadora Fe, tiene relaciones al estilo kink con su colega y empleado Martín cada Noche de Brujas. En estos encuentros, Fe se viste de la brasileña esclavizada Xica da Silva, usando un vestido original de la mulata legendaria. A través del mito y los rituales, los personajes de " se abren " a una historia abyecta de sus identidades. Este artículo analiza la violación fundacional, las fiestas, las máscaras y los laberintos en las obras de los dos escritores. Muestra los paralelos entre el pachuco de Paz y la Xica de Santos-Febres. Analiza la soledad y el amor en el ensayo y la novela y termina con una lectura alegórica y política de las obras de ambos escritores. Santos-Febres presenta una adultez pan-americana que, a través de esta alegoría del " loco amor " , abre el pasado y el futuro de la historia a través de la poesía, el cuerpo, el mito y el género femenino.

Una lectura comparativa de los poemas inéditos de los Manuel Zapata Olivella Papers (los Papeles ... more Una lectura comparativa de los poemas inéditos de los Manuel Zapata Olivella Papers (los Papeles de Manuel Zapata Olivella en Vanderbilt University, Estados Unidos) con los que aparecen en la versión definitiva de Changó, el gran putas (1983) muestra una reestructuración del texto, en el que detalles importantes revelan la posición del autor en cuanto a que las letras cuentan tanto como las armas en el recuerdo y la liberación de la diáspora africana. Este artículo focalizará su análisis en distintas manifestaciones del rol del poeta en la sociedad: el guerrero-poeta Nagó el Navegante, los orichas Elegua y Oko y el griot Ngafúa/Bandama. La poesía en la novela representa, en cada caso, una forma distinta de arma libertadora.

This article argues that Puerto Rican Alejandro Tapia y Rivera's novel Póstumo el Transmigrado is... more This article argues that Puerto Rican Alejandro Tapia y Rivera's novel Póstumo el Transmigrado is an important precursor to Machado de Assis's Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas. By placing the two works in dialogue with one another, the article shows that the common influence of Kardecist spiritism appears to be an inspiration for these authors' projects of challenging the mimetic language of their time—particularly that used in science, social Darwinism, and realist aesthetics—which was heavily influenced by the unquestionable truths of positivism.

En la novela Fe en disfraz (2009), Mayra Santos-Febres ha reescrito El laberinto de la soledad (1... more En la novela Fe en disfraz (2009), Mayra Santos-Febres ha reescrito El laberinto de la soledad (1950) de Octavio Paz en un espacio transnacional que incluye Estados Unidos, Brasil, Puerto Rico y Venezuela para hacer el estudio de la esclavitud y la identidad afro-latinoamericana pagano, corpóreo, visceral y político. Su protagonista, la historiadora Fe, tiene relaciones al estilo kink con su colega y empleado Martín cada Noche de Brujas. En estos encuentros, Fe se viste de la brasileña esclavizada Xica da Silva, usando un vestido original de la mulata legendaria. A través del mito y los rituales, los personajes de " se abren " a una historia abyecta de sus identidades. Este artículo analiza la violación fundacional, las fiestas, las máscaras y los laberintos en las obras de los dos escritores. Muestra los paralelos entre el pachuco de Paz y la Xica de Santos-Febres. Analiza la soledad y el amor en el ensayo y la novela y termina con una lectura alegórica y política de las obras de ambos escritores. Santos-Febres presenta una adultez pan-americana que, a través de esta alegoría del " loco amor " , abre el pasado y el futuro de la historia a través de la poesía, el cuerpo, el mito y el género femenino.
