Educational system itself and the conditions of these buildings are very important issues to the community. The sustainability of such buildings can only be achieved to the extent that, at local level, measures regarding the physical renovation will be combined with measures that promote environmental protection. The energy retrofitting of existing school buildings in recent years is part of the policies of the European Union and, consequently, of Romania. In this paper we put together data that establish the current status of a stock of 12 educational buildings and assess the level of applying building standards in each case, the available retrofit solutions, and what would be the impact of the applied solutions. One big challenge regarding existing school buildings is the collection of high-quality data. This paper presents complex data analytics with the aim of providing a framework and a methodology...

Distributed attention has been shown to be very important in processing information and its integration in comprehensive knowledge areas. This research aims to directly test the distributed attention capacity of university students through a smart testing environment designed to integrate classical testing methods such as the Prague test for measuring distributed attention with means of neuro-sensorial devices. The Smart Testing Environment is endowed with several sensors that measure physical characteristics such as: attention, blood pressure, eye tracking. Captured data is processed by a rule-based expert system that achieves time series analytics and computes correlations between experiments. This pilot study will be continued with experiments that measure students’ attention during various courses and labs.

CREST is used in a broad range of collaborative applications and enables multi-authoring, using information in educational interactions by indicating information source, maintaining information, structuring information, adding meta-information, and sharing information among participants. An ontology enabled annotation and knowledge management environment was developed and endowed with collaborative information searching agents. Two agents were implemented in order to search and download aggregated metadata and text documents from the Web and to store information into a documents corpus repository. The corpus repository is further accessed by users through the annotator interface. This original approach is based on open standards and integrates open source services that improve discovery and reasoning across domain specific collections. CREST allows users to create, edit, store, and retrieve objects and annotations, promotes development and re-use of meaningful content. Such environment has a great utility for the development of virtual learning and research spaces.

This research proposes to translate conceptual ideas for the functionality of the environment and appliances into concrete designs. The core of the intelligent educational environment is an information system called the brain lateralization information system (BLIS). The BLIS can provide valuable information on users’ brain lateralization and students’ thinking style. Such information can be used by educators in designing new teaching methodologies that will finally lead to adapted, personalized study programs within the university curricula. The chapter shows how this approach, which has hitherto been applied to students, teaching staff and management staff from the departments of Computer Science, Applied Electronics, and Environmental Engineering of the University of Alba Iulia, was validated to allow future development of methodologies, strategies, and operational programs in the field of engineering education. In order to achieve this vision the chapter introduces a number of novel concepts and a model, in particular a new brain lateralization information system embedded into an ambient intelligent environment. Finally, the chapter reports on conclusions, recommendations and examples of adapted and personalized courseware designed for blended learning, and a user evaluation of this model, which demonstrates that users find the ambient intelligence environment useful for their career choice and easy and enjoyable to use for teachers and decision makers.

The focus is given to a negotiation mechanism required at business level. The mechanism is achieved by software agents within a collaborative working environment in the special case of notified transient situations. Automated negotiation is one of the most common approaches used to make decisions and manage disputes between computational entities leading them to optimal agreements.

This paper proposes a system for promoting sustainable interoperability between enterprises involved in complex networked environments through multi-level negotiation, communication and information sharing. The proposed solution is based on a multi-agent system architecture that applies rule-based negotiation at various organizational levels such as: business, ICT, workflows, data systems and people. This architecture has been tested in the case of a collaborative networked environment in which several entities, namely funding authority, beneficiary of funds, contractors and subcontractors have been already contractually engaged and due to an announced breaking down of interoperability renegotiation has been required in order to re-established interoperability at business level.

It sets off by explaining the concept of knowledge-based society and why it bears relevance for the modern world. Next, innovation and related concepts are introduced. Furthermore, a presentation of National Innovation Systems (NIS) is made, their history and role in the understanding of a systemic approach to research, development and innovation at both national and global level. Next, the OECD main guidelines for the elaboration of national innovation policies are presented. Last but not least, an analysis of the current situation of research and innovation in Romania is also included.

The primary goal was to create an enhanced learning and teaching environment, goal that was achieved through specific objectives: (i.) to set up a research testing laboratory where real conditions of a smart city is simulated; (ii.) to develop and implement a software instrument for students’ evaluation; (iii.) to develop and implement a software solution for processing data provided by various types of sensors used in the smart city environment. The project successfully complemented the academic curricula with a module of practical applications, which simulate existing automation projects on the market, integrates data obtained from sensors and provides statistical models. Smart City Lab (SCL) computing system covers all stages of data processing in automated systems.
