Different aspects of battery operated auto-rickshaw, such as energy consumption rate, transport related emission attenuation rate, potentials of generating income and employment, trip characteristics, problems associated etc have been explored with a view to providing a generalized idea on the mode. The paper would provide guidelines to the policy makers of a country regarding whether and how to incorporate the mode in the local town's transportation system. Battery operated auto-rickshaw offers lower travel cost than rickshaw, greater travel comfort than other urban para-transits like auto tempo, nosimon and public transport like minibus, and therefore attracts passengers significantly from those modes. Around 88 % of people living in a city where battery operated auto-rickshaws are available, avail the mode now to meet their travel demand. Through attracting passengers from fuel operated vehicles, the mode has replaced them at great extent. A considerable percentage of daily electricity demand of local towns is being consumed by this mode which is creating pressure on local electricity supply in turn. However, considering the duration and period of load shedding caused due to recharging this mode, energy consumption by the mode can be negotiated as it is liable for only 1.53 hours of load shedding a day which takes place at off-peak period at night. The mode is economically beneficial in case of investment too as it involves an income-cost ratio of 1.85. From operator's point of view, driving of the mode as an occupation involves lower investment cost, greater earning, more comfort and occupational freedom than other occupations available in local towns for low income people.

Research paper thumbnail of Impact of Flood Hazards on the Agricultural Production and Livelihood Shifting in Rural Bangladesh: A Comparative Study

The study is conducted on four districts having mutually different levels of exposure to floods. The study reveals that in a 20 years period between 1991 and 2011, the number of people engaged in agricultural sectors decreases continuously; the decreasing rate, however, is not equal for all of the study districts. The non-flood prone district has a very slow decreasing rate of 1.52% per year, while the rate is more than 4% in highly flood prone districts that suffer from high agricultural losses every year due to floods. Two statistical analysis tools- co relation co efficient and r- squared value are used in the research to find out the linkages between the two variables. R-squared value, however, calculated in the research shows that more than 76% of agricultural population decrease in a highly flood prone district in Bangladesh could be result of the flood-caused agricultural losses, while the figure is found 41% in case of district less exposed to flood.

In be more specific, how sufficient yield of sugarcane could be achieved, as well as sustained in the country, is discussed in the paper based on the analysis, along with exploring its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Bangladesh imports around 1.26 million metric ton of sugar each year to meet its national demand deficit. The research shows that local growing of sugarcane rather imports of sugar would save around BDT8,937.94 million per year. In addition, local production of sugarcane and its processing to sugar would result in the by-production of molasses, chobra and spirit/alcohol at massive scale that might considerably contribute to the national economy. The paper, in this regard, proposes eight contiguous districts of Bangladesh with high sugarcane productivity to form a regional belt where deficit amount of sugarcane could be grown every year. In addition, several policy recommendations are made with a view to sustaining this yield of sugarcane in the country.

The paper with scientific research outcomes would provide guidelines to the policy makers of a country regarding whether and how to incorporate the mode in the local town’s transportation system.

Wheat, the second most important cereal in Bangladesh, is cultivated mainly for ‘ata’ or flour. Every year, there goes haphazard and unplanned production of this crop in the country, which cannot meet the rapidly growing domestic demand for it. Therefore, significant quantities of wheat are needed to import to meet the national demand deficit every year and undoubtedly this involves spending of a huge amount of money. However, cultivation of this crop in planned way could solve the problem substantially. In this paper some planning proposals have been made with a view to obtaining sufficient yield of wheat in Bangladesh and thus meeting the national demand.

This is a secondary data based research that investigates different country examples quantitatively in order to derive the generalized as well as triangulated impacts of promoting RETs on the local economic growth of a country and thereafter, foretells potential impacts of promoting the technologies on the economy of Bangladesh based on the evidences. The research, in this regard, reveals that RETs can reduce the import of expensive fossil fuels and hence the out-leakage of national as well as regional capitals; in transposition, can enrich the local economy significantly through bringing external investments into the region. In addition, RETs interventions may increase local employment opportunities, reduce energy costs (both at individual households, regional and national levels), promote local tourism, enhance income of local people as well as revenue of the local government units (e.g. municipalities) from those external investments. In this nexus, Bangladesh-with its large scale dependence on importing expensive fossil fuels and electricity, might get benefitted economically from promoting RETs in several ways; for instance, the adoption and promotion of the technologies would generate considerable addition to the gross domestic product of the country at almost zero local cost; growing disparities in regional growth could be minimized to some extent; local people's access to electricity could be increased and their expenditures for energy consumption could be decreased etc. The research-with such findings might produce decision making tools for Bangladesh in developing renewable energy policies and/or strengthening the embryonic renewable energy governance for the country.
