A team of Central American historians carried out this investigation work, under the coordination of the University of Costa Rica and the support of UNESCO San Jose. Several novels directly witness those days of slavery through prose and poetry, ranging from episodes of slavery and marginalization, to those leading towards freedom, as stated in the book’s title.

Back then, Spain itself was embracing strong migration fluxes, displaying a wide ethnic diversity: Arabs, Syrians, English, French and Africans. The collection hence starts off questioning the meaning of the word “white”, which was used as a synonym of Spaniard, shading though a much more complex reality.A team of Central American historians carried out this investigation work, under the coordination of the University of Costa Rica and the support of UNESCO San Jose. They worked on recreating the time of the conquer of the “new world”, when mulatos and blacks arrived as free individuals. It is also conveyed the way in which important monuments, as the cathedral of Leon in Nicaragua and that of Antigua in Guatemala, were designed by black or mulato architects.

A team of Central American historians carried out this investigation work, under the coordination of the University of Costa Rica and the support of UNESCO San Jose. The book reports episodes of fights for freedom, ranging from maroons movement during the XVI century -which kneeled trade flows across the panama isthmus-, to modest stories of anonymous representatives of civil society, silently displaying examples of human solidarity, like slave mothers who used to give birth to their child over night, giving them to the neighbours so to have them brought up as free persons.

Two historical moments are defined by the founding of the Genovese Grillo and Lomelin´s Asiento, the vestiges of which are still visible in the Casa de los Genoveses in Panama Viejo. The Asiento serves as springboard to explore the political reconfigurations that took place during the period and the changing slave networks found both in the Caribbean and along the Atlantic coast of the African continent. A reconstruction is offered of the context of the export region, as well as the challenges faced upon the arrival in America. Based on secondary sources, the article explores the demographic impact of the arrival of the Africans and suggests that, without their contribution to the population, the demographic recovery, as well as the constitution of modern society, would have been very difficult.
