Practitioners take on roles of both audience and performer when dancing the bailado and engage in transcorporeal discourse with various beings. Drawing from Santo Daime hymns, participant observation and personal journal entries as a daimista, this paper argues that the bailado decolonizes dance in three ways: as part of a unique caboclo knowledge system; through cultivation of collective subjectivities by participants; and by challenging Eurocentric definitions of dance.

Choreographing re-membrance:The Santo Daime bailado and subjectivities of corpo/realization, 2022

Founded in the early 1930s, Santo Daime is now practiced in more than forty countries, though we know little about its persistent cross-cultural performances. Mobilizing my research through the field of dance studies, I ask what cultural and epistemological values does the bailado choreograph and how does performance of the bailado influence the lives of those who participate. Working with a mixed methods approach, this study will advance my emerging concept of corpo/realization, which I define as the learning practitioners accomplish through dance practices and other forms of kinesthetic engagement. My mixed methods approach for this study combines research into the socio-cultural environment out of which the bailado originated with participant observation and ethnographic study of the experiences of bailado practitioners in a diverse range of Santo Daime centers today. This approach will allow me to investigate knowledge systems from which Santo Daime emerged and how the choreography of the bailado is performed and travels through the bodies of practitioners in different times and spaces. My findings will help bring more sociological legibility to the field of dance studies, and apply concepts of choreography as a source of knowledge and socio-cultural value to theorizations of corporeality in the social sciences.
