There has been rapid growth in the number of educational technology researchers and practitioners... more There has been rapid growth in the number of educational technology researchers and practitioners within Southern Africa since the late 1990s. However, there is still limited sharing of good practice and fresh thinking between institutions and across the region. Furthermore the cost of attending face to face conferences serves as a barrier to engagement with both regional and global conversations about online and blended
learning. All too often we operate in isolation from related projects within our region, resulting in missed opportunities for shared conversations about practice and possible guiding principles.

The e/merge 2004 online conference arose from a face to face conversation between two practitioners in December 2002 about how to promote online communities and online
collaboration in South Africa. This paper reflects on the experience of preparing for, delivering and evaluating the e/merge 2004 online conference on collaborative blended
learning in Southern Africa (http://emerge2004.net), which was initiated to promote the growth of educational technology communities of practice in Southern Africa. Our role models included online conferences by Group Jazz (http://www.groupjazz.com) for their balance between formal and community growing conversation, conferences by
icohere (http://www.icohere.com) for the integration of synchronous and asynchronous environments and the facilitation models of Nancy White (www.fullcirc.com) and Gilly
Salmon (www.atimod.com) which celebrate the interface between formal and informal learning.

e/merge 2004 facilitated powerful online community of practice interaction among 163 educational technology practitioners and researchers from across Southern Africa and around the world. As far as we are aware this was the first conference of its kind in Southern Africa. The conversations were both synchronous and asynchronous and included both scheduled discussions of selected papers and informal discussions.
The paper shares insights concerning key issues for online conferences such as design of conference spaces, technology choices and facilitation processes. We also draw on an
analysis and coding of some of the online conversations using schemas for the coding of learning and teaching behaviours, and a summary of key themes from post-conference
interviews of participants to explore the nature of the conference experience.

Jeanne brought her passion, her transformational insight and her materials development expertise to this project. Jeanne was ingenious, courageous, compassionate and beautiful. Her physical challenges could not constrain her soul nor her passions for human connection, deep learning, powerful communication and profound personal and social change. She is greatly missed.

The uptake of ICTs for education is to a large extent dependent on how enabling the national environment is, particularly in terms of the availability of national telecommunications and ICT infrastructure. This is particularly relevant in the developing world (Shabani, 2007). Although the 'digital divide' is said to be shrinking with respect to fixed line telephones, mobile ...

Such access is associated with increased readership and increased citation of an author's work. Farrell and Isaacs stated that most "African universities are seriously constrained in the use of ICT by a lack of computer stations and a lack of access to affordable high-speed Internet connectivity" (p23). These basic infrastructure issues may however be easier to address than the limited "human resource capacity to exploit the technology" (p26). In the same year the report on ICTs in Higher Education ...
