On Premodified Terms in 5 Specialized Dictionaries
Terminology is a key factor in LSP: technical translation, LSP teaching terminology research and ... more Terminology is a key factor in LSP: technical translation, LSP teaching terminology research and teaching, text retrieval, among others. In this article, premodification of terms is analyzed in 5 specialiazed dictionaries. Noun phrases with more than two premodifiers were extracted, classified, and linguistically analyzed in the field of medicine, lab techniques, economics, finance, and statistics. Results show tendencies in pattern length, POS preferences, morphology trends, premodified patterns. The results of this description can be useful for terminology extraction, dictionary making and terminology teaching, among others.

In this article, a proposal for the teaching of the translation of noun phrases with multiple pre... more In this article, a proposal for the teaching of the translation of noun phrases with multiple premodification from English into Spanish is presented. First of all, a rationale on noun phrases with multiple premodification as a translation problem is discussed. Secondly, the linguistic bases for their description are analyzed. Then, the results of an experiment with translation apprentices are described. Finally, some of the didactic strategies used in the experiments are described.

The publication under review is the second volume of one of three new handbooks of translation st... more The publication under review is the second volume of one of three new handbooks of translation studies: Volume 1 of the Benjamins Handbook appeared in 2010, the Oxford Handbook of Translation Studies was published in March 2011 and the Routledge Handbook of Translation Studies will come onto the market in October 2012. These handbooks complement the various translation studies readers, companions, encyclopaedias and dictionaries published since the mid 1990s by prominent specialists such as Lawrence Venuti, Jeremy Munday and Mona Baker. The proliferation of general reference works is a positive sign of the growing academic status of the discipline. The handbook edited by Gambier and van Doorslaer could perhaps also have been labelled ‘encyclopaedia’ or ‘lexicon’: the 35 contributions in this volume bring the number of entries to a total of 108 on 655 pages. In comparison, the Routledge Handbook contains 39 chapters on 576 pages and the Oxford Handbook offers 32 contributions on over 600 pages. In the introduction, the editors describe the contributions as ‘brief overview articles’ (p. ix) that are longer than average dictionary entries yet shorter than traditional articles in handbooks. They are an academic tool addressing both a broader audience and students of translation and interpreting, who ‘often prefer to surf the net, to skim and make do with short texts rather than studying long monographs’ (p. ix). The most significant advantage of this handbook project, however, is the fact that it is the ‘first encyclopedia with this scope in translation studies to offer both a print edition and an online version’ (p. ix). The online version will allow regular updates and interactivity: the editors actively encourage feedback from users. Another innovative and useful aspect of this project is its interconnection with the online Translation Studies Bibliography. Clearly, deciding to use the publishing potentialities of the Internet while also retaining the solid and tangible paper basis of traditional printing gives this publication the best of both worlds. While the contributions are relatively short (500 6000 words) and therefore can treat complex concepts only cursorily, readers are provided with a brief bibliography and a list of further reading. Within each article, references to other related entries in the handbook, as well as their location in Volume 1 or Volume 2, are clearly marked. The subject index also contains references to both volumes. The complexity of the discipline is reflected in the myriad themes treated in the 35 new entries: these range from advertising translation (Valdés) via remote interpreting (Moser-Mercer) to medical translation and interpreting (Montalt), from pseudotranslation (O’Sullivan) to poetry translation (Jones). Resumen: En este artículo abordamos la cuestión de la presencia autorial y del posicionamiento de... more Resumen: En este artículo abordamos la cuestión de la presencia autorial y del posicionamiento del autor a través del estudio de verbos de posicionamiento del autor asociados a un pronombre sujeto (ejemplo: «yo busco demostrar, nosotros pensamos que»). El estudio, basado en corpus, compara las introducciones y conclusiones de tres disciplinas de las ciencias humanas y sociales: la lingüística, la psicología y las ciencias de la educación. Los resultados muestran que la mención explícita del autor/locutor no es frecuente en los artículos de ciencias humanas examinados y, desde ese punto de vista, el género del artículo de investigación en esas disciplinas se caracteriza mucho por cierta discreción enunciativa. Sin embargo, se observa una gran variación de disciplinas en el seno de las ciencias humanas examinadas, lo que muestra que esta familia de disciplinas es extremadamente diversificada y que no es pertinente aprehenderla como un conjunto homogéneo.
