Accountability in philanthropy typically focuses on transparency, best practices, measures and st... more Accountability in philanthropy typically focuses on transparency, best practices, measures and standards. This paper explores the phenomenon of nonprofit accountability in the context of Australian philanthropic foundations, specifically Public Ancillary Funds (PubAFs). PubAFs make grants to nonprofit organisations and fundraise from the general public. They include community foundations, corporate foundations and ‘flow-through’ or fundraising foundations for individual charities such as hospitals or schools. While PubAFs share a common legal form, they vary widely regarding values, mission, history and identity. PubAFs as nonprofit organisations receive tax exemptions and concessions, and are thus ‘subsidised’ by taxpayers. Accountability sharpens nonprofits’ focus by enhancing effectiveness and legitimacy, reducing the risk of scandals and loss of public trust. The sample consisted of 9 first-year undergraduate students at Kalasin University, Kalasin Province, Thailand in the second semester of the academic year 2017 classified by high, medium, and low proficiency level according to their abilities.
