The main objectives of the study are to look into the types of diseases caused by the air pollutants from the Sokoto cement industry and examine how cement pollution negatively impacts the health of the people of the Kalambaina Community. The survey method was adopted and a sample of 195 respondents was taken to represent the Kalambaina community. A combination of cluster sampling, purposive and systematic sampling techniques was used. A personal face-to-face structured questionnaire was used to collect the data from the respondents and the analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). To further support the findings, 10 key informants were interviewed. They were the traditional and religious leaders of the four villages chosen for the study, as well as the health and environmental personnel of the Kalambaina community. The findings reveal that cement pollution has negatively impacted the health of the people of the Kalambaina community, causing various maladies, endangering their health, and thus, stagnating their development. Adequate measures were not taken by the government to address the problem. Subsequently, some community members have chosen to migrate to safer places. Proper environmental laws and social policies must be implemented by both the government and the cement industry
to curb this health crisis and enhance environmental sustainability

The debate on the scientific status of the Social Sciences and their bid to achieve objectivity i... more The debate on the scientific status of the Social Sciences and their bid to achieve objectivity in their inquiries is an unending debate within and outside the Social Science family. The positivists are of the opinion that objectivity in Social Science is achievable and that scientific methods can be used in Social Science inquiry, just the same or similar way(s) the natural scientists do their scientific endeavor. To the positivists ‘value-free Social Science’ is possible. This position is however criticized even within the Social Sciences, let alone in the scientific world. All these debates centered on whether or not the Social Scientists are truly scientific in their quest for knowledge. No matter the outcome of the debate what is obvious is that there is a philosophical problem with scientific objectivity in general. Based on a historical review of the development of certain scientific theories, in his book, ‘the Structure of scientific revolutions’, a scientist and a historian Thomas Kuhn raised some philosophical objections to claims of the possibility of scientific understanding being truly objective. Against this backdrop, the paper seeks to unravel the varied theoretical debates on the subject.

across Nigeria. The commoditization of water is most manifest in the boom of packaged water,
especially the ones in sachets popularly called ‘pure water’. The initial position of the government
was to ignore the industry as part of the informal economy. After considerable concerns were raised
on public health grounds that water merchants were selling ‘pure gutter’ instead of ‘pure water’, the
government, through the National Agency for Food and Drugs Control (NAFDAC) intervened to
regulate standards. Proprietors of packaged water are expected to apply for licenses which can only
be issued after inspection of their facility by NAFDAC officials. Consumers are advised to patronize only packaged water with NAFDAC number, which is supposed to come with a certification
of quality. The paper also examined the socio-economic implications of “pure water” sale, taken
cognisance of the policies and reforms on water supply in Nigeria historically. Content analysis
through the review of Secondary sources was used. The sale of packaged water will help to ease
the hardship in accessing portable water, but the need for tight measures for ensuring its purity by
regulatory bodies is paramount

the populace on the dangers associated with environmental pollution and possibly profer solutions to the problems. Secondary data was
used to systematically review the literature through narrative method. Talcott Parsons „AGIL‟ schema was used in this paper. The findings revealed some pollutants that were identified and widely associated with air pollution, especially with emissions from industrial
activities, auto mobiles and other sources of pollutants that causes harm to both man and his environment. The findings also revealed that
Sokoto Cement Company is supposed to be a source of development to Kalambaina community, through job creation, providing cheaper
building materials and other social amenities, however, it has negatively impacted the community to a large extent by endangering the
health of the populace, thereby, stagnating their socio-economic development. Recommendations were made that the government should
create policies that will make the Company responsible for the damages caused by pollution to the host community. They should provide
tenure employment, social amenities and also be made to implement environment friendly policies that will limit the pollution caused by
the activities of the Company.

state of being corrupt and rotten. Corruption destroys the entire societal fabric as it undermines the effectiveness of
government’s social policies aimed at providing social or welfare services to citizenry; and even those policies aimed at fighting
its continue existence. This paper examines critically the various ways through which corruption had became institutionalized in
Nigeria and its subsequent impact on political culture and behaviour on the one hand and its implications for development on
the other hand. The paper hypothesized that the institutionalization of corruption leads to an overall change in the value-system
and norms of behavior in a society. This was eventually related exclusively to politics and the manifestations of corruption in the
political arena were discussed.

Practitioners of TMP largely rely on knowledge base on local plants and herbs, as well as spiritual beliefs that has been developed over centuries. Although, this knowledge base is known to vary according to geographical environments and cultures, changes in the environment pose a great threat to TMP. Thus, understanding how this challenge impacts on sustainability of TMP in local communities is desirable in providing useful data that could be used to preserve the much-needed knowledge base required for TMP. In this study, we aim to assess, from the Practitioners’ point of view, the impact of climate change on TMP in Nigeria and make recommendations that will be useful in assuring sustainable supply of ethno medicines. Through assigned coordinators from universities domiciled in 6 geopolitical regions of the country, 1200 structured questionnaire were administered to indigenous practitioners (with > 20 years’ experience) in local communities….. Although the study is still ongoing, preliminary findings have identified “rural-to-urban drift of people as well as practioners”, “disrupted ecosystems” and “damaged natural environment” as climate-linked factors that affect cultivation of medicinal plants as well as passage of important medicinal information from generation to generation……
