Aniline surface coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by UV irradiation v... more Aniline surface coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by UV irradiation varying the time and the acid media (HCl, HNO3, or H2SO4). The synthesized material represents a promising platform for application in nerve regeneration. XRD patterns are consistent with the crystalline structure of magnetite. Nevertheless, for UV irradiation times longer than 2 h, extra XRD lines reveal the presence of goethite. The mean crystallite size of uncoated particles is estimated to be 25.4 nm, meanwhile that size is reduced to 19.9 nm for the UV irradiated sample in HCl medium for 4 h. Mössbauer spectra of uncoated nanoparticles reveal the occurrence of thermal relaxation at room temperature, while the 77 K-Mössbauer spectrum suggests the occurrence of electron localization effects similar to that expected in bulk magnetite. The Mossbauer spectra of UV irradiated sample in HCl medium during 4 h, confirms the presence of the goethite phase. For this sample, the thermal relaxation is more evident, since the room temperature spectrum shows larger spectral area for the nonmagnetic component due to the smaller crystallite size. Meanwhile, the 77 K-Mössbauer spectrum suggests the absence of the electron localization effect above 77 K.

The efficiency of early selection was assessed in a test of 94 Eucalyptus urophylla clones using ... more The efficiency of early selection was assessed in a test of 94 Eucalyptus urophylla clones using the variables diameter at breast height and tree height, evaluated in the municipality of Guanhães – Minas Gerais. The procedure Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML) Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) was used to estimate genetic parameters. The direct and indirect gains by early selection were also estimated at age three years for a response at age six; when the 5 best clones were selected when compared to the experimental controls,. The individual coefficients of broad-sense heritability were 53% and 58%, in the two years of evaluation. The predicted gains by early selection at age three years were in agreement of 97.9% for DBH and 95.7% for tree height in relation with the results after six years growth. Objetivou-se, com essa pesquisa, realizar a classificação quanto a tolerância à dessecação e a ca... more Objetivou-se, com essa pesquisa, realizar a classificação quanto a tolerância à dessecação e a capacidade de armazenamento de sementes de cinco espécies florestais de matas ciliares da bacia do Alto Rio Grande, no Estado de Minas Gerias. Sementes de Casearia sylvestris Swart (Salicaceae), Qualea grandiflora Mart. (Vochysiaceae), Guarea kunthiana A. Juss. (Meliaceae), Eremanthus incanus Less. (Asteraceae), Protium heptaphyllum March. (Burseraceae) foram coletadas e transportadas ao Laboratório de Sementes Florestais, aonde foram beneficiadas e submetidas a dois tipos de secagem, rápida e lenta. Em seguida, foram armazenadas em freezer ou em câmara fria e avaliadas quanto à viabilidade. Após a classificação fisiológica, verificou-se que sementes de C. sylvestris e E. incanus são ortodoxas. Em contra-partida, sementes de G. kunthiana e P. heptaphyllum foram classificadas como recalcitrantes e Q. grandiflora como intermediárias, pois não toleram a secagem a baixos conteúdos de água.

Inoculation of a common bean differential series is the usual method for identification of races ... more Inoculation of a common bean differential series is the usual method for identification of races of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. This procedure is extremely useful for phytopathological as well as breeding purposes, but it requires strict control of the number of spores and incubation conditions. Furthermore, this method may result in misclassifications of isolates because of the subjectivity of symptom evaluation. We propose the use of DNA-based molecular markers as an auxiliary tool to aid the classification of races of C. lindemuthianum. Specific DNA bands were identified for races 73, 65, and 64 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of bulked DNA samples from isolates of these three races with random primers. The presence of these bands was checked on four isolates previously classified by inoculation on a differential series as belonging to races 23, 72, 79, and 585.
