Analyses of drug advertising reveal important social and cultural values and attitudes at a certa... more Analyses of drug advertising reveal important social and cultural values and attitudes at a certain point in history. The purpose of this paper was to investigate how pharmaceutical industry communicates with pharmacists in Brazil, using drug promotion as a valuable tool. The point of departure was the analysis of a series of drug advertisements published in three Brazilian technical journals targeted at pharmacists and other health professionals. For the present study, the focus was on the content of the messages directed to pharmacists, in order to critically analyze the role attributed to these professionals as portrayed by the ads, and to discuss it in the context of pharmaceutical care. The collection and analysis of the data followed Anvisa's methodology. Pharmacists' social responsibility includes the reduction of preventable drug-related morbidity and mortality, but the information provided by the ads only refers to sales growth and profitability. This paper presents an analysis on drug advertising in Brazil, based on the final report of the M... more This paper presents an analysis on drug advertising in Brazil, based on the final report of the MonitorAÇÃO Project, by the group from the Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Due to a partnership between the university and the National Agency for Health Surveillance (ANVISA), drug advertisements were monitored and analyzed for one year, according to the methodology defined by the Agency. The samples were collected in medical practices and hospitals, drugstores, pharmacies and in scientific magazines. TV and radio programs were monitored, in the case of OTC drugs. 159 advertisements referring to pharmaceuticals were sent to ANVISA, from a total of 263 irregular ads analyzed between October 2004 and August 2005. The main problems found were the poor quality of drug information to health professionals, as well as misleading drug use to lay population. Based on the results of this project and on other studies, the banning of drug advertising in Brazil is proposed.
Neste trabalho teorico buscou-se refletir de forma aprofundada, embora geral, sobre as relacoes d... more Neste trabalho teorico buscou-se refletir de forma aprofundada, embora geral, sobre as relacoes de autonomia/dependencia no processo terapeutico. O metodo de analise seguiu a perspectiva da complexidade, conforme proposta especialmente por Edgar Morin. Partiu-se de uma reflexao sobre as questoes envolvendo o uso dos medicamentos, surgidas ao longo da trajetoria profissional e que levaram a necessidade da discussao sobre autonomia ou sua falta na biomedicina contemporânea. Foram discutidos os modos pelos quais a autonomia vem sendo pensada em diversos campos do saber, com o objetivo de elaborar um primeiro mapeamento dos pontos de articulacao existentes entre as varias dimensoes a serem integradas em uma conceituacao complexa da autonomia. Entre seus principios constitutivos, destacou-se sua caracteristica relativa e relacional, inseparavel de dependencia. Um segundo principio seria sua emergencia como condicao necessaria para a saude, compreendida em seu sentido mais amplo, como potencia auto-recuperadora do organismo humano, um valor fundamental. Foram discutidas as implicacoes do resgate da autonomia, ainda que como um vir-a-ser, como precondicao para a saude e a cidadania, para a propria vida. Fez-se uma critica as politicas que preconizam o uso racional do medicamentos, propondo-se o uso critico, ativo e reflexivo desses produtos, o que tarnbem exigiria o resgate da autonomia dos sujeitos do processo terapeutico os doentes.

Com base na experiência em aperfeiçoamento e formação profissional de nível médio para o Sistema ... more Com base na experiência em aperfeiçoamento e formação profissional de nível médio para o Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), consolidada no Departamento de Formação Profissional para o Sistema de Saúde (DFPSS) da Escola Politécnica de Saúde Joaquim Venâncio (EPSJV), estabeleceu-se a necessidade de pensar a qualificação profissional dos diversos trabalhadores que atuam no chamado campo da saúde coletiva. Compõem este setor do SUS os profissionais de vigilância sanitária, de vigilância epidemiológica, de saneamento em saúde, de controle de endemias e zoonoses e de laboratórios de saúde pública.

This paper presents a critical review of concepts of health and disease in biomedicine, as a cont... more This paper presents a critical review of concepts of health and disease in biomedicine, as a contribution to rethinking health in positive terms. We take Canguilhem's epistemology as a starting point in order to highlight fundamental issues in the discussion about health, integrating it with a new understanding of the concept of patient autonomy in the therapeutic process, using an analysis method that takes an approach based on complexity. In this perspective, autonomy is relative, relational and inseparable from dependence. It is also a necessary condition for health, in its broadest meaning, as the self-recovering potential of the human organism. Therefore, autonomy becomes a fundamental value to be reinstated and defended in medical practice, as well as in the social and human sciences' field. A discussion of the implications of the concept of autonomy is presented, if only as a harbinger of a future state, as a precondition for health, citizenship and for life itself.

Due to a partnership between the university and the National Agency for Health Surveillance (ANVISA), drug advertisements were monitored and analyzed for one year, according to the methodology defined by the Agency. The samples were collected in medical practices and hospitals, drugstores, pharmacies and in scientific magazines. TV and radio programs were monitored, in the case of OTC drugs. 159 advertisements referring to pharmaceuticals were sent to ANVISA,from a total of 263 irregular ads analyzed between October 2004 and August 2005.
