This study examines the role of metaphor in the conceptualization of očaj ‘despair’ based on the ... more This study examines the role of metaphor in the conceptualization of očaj ‘despair’ based on the Croatian corpus hrWaC. The study also considers some non-figurative aspects. Employing “metaphorical pattern analysis” (Stefanowitsch 2006) and MIP (Pragglejaz Group 2007) methods, the paper scrutinizes corpus examples that contain the target-domain word očaj ‘despair’, looking for metaphorical patterns. These patterns were extracted from a random sample of 1,000 citations and additional corpus citations that were retrieved based on a list of collocation candidates. The analysis shows that the metaphorical conceptualization of očaj ‘despair’ in Croatian in the data examined relates to approximately forty source domains, out of which the most frequently utilized is CONTAINER, followed by OBJECT. The source domains identified in the conceptualization of očaj illustrate similarities between the metaphors for očaj in Croatian and those identified for sadness and depression in various languages, and point toward universal features of metaphorical conceptualization of some emotions and emotional states.

This study examines Croatian blends that include personal names (first names, surnames, nicknames... more This study examines Croatian blends that include personal names (first names, surnames, nicknames, aliases; thereinafter: personal name blends, PN blends) as at least one of their sourcewords. The focus is first on the structure of these blends, then, some aspects of their usage, semantics, and discursive function are considered. This analysis is based on a sample of PN blends extracted from the Croatian dictionary of lexical blends (MARKOVIĆ/KLINDIĆ/BORKOVIĆ 2016: Hrvatski rječnik stopljenica) which is the most comprehensive source of blends in Croatian to date.). For this analysis, the first three chapters of the dictionary were systematically examined.

This study examines readers' perceptions of impoliteness in user comments on online news articles... more This study examines readers' perceptions of impoliteness in user comments on online news articles in two daily newspapers: Croatia's Jutarnji list and Serbia's Večernje novosti. The study considers judgments by four younger study participants that did not participate in the online discussions as posters. These readers evaluated impoliteness from their own point of view, identifying impolite utterances in 668 user comments. Participants' judgments are categorized and analyzed drawing on Culpeper's (2011a) taxonomy of impoliteness formulae and triggers. This study focuses on utterances and language means judged impolite by the majority-that is, three or four participants-with the aim of identifying frequent impoliteness formulae and language means that are judged to be impolite. Among the phenomena judged impolite by three or four readers, predominant are conventionalized impoliteness formulae with terms from the domains of sexual activities and mental health, and referential terms with a historical burden. Cursing was regularly judged impolite, as well as expressions with words from the semantic domain of scatology, words evoking animal metaphors, and name modifications (blends) resulting in taboo or derogatory terms. There seems to be a strong correlation between the phenomena judged impolite and discursive identity construction-that is, establishing the border between "us" and "them"-which in the data often involved negative, and even stigmatizing, descriptions of those considered to belong to another national group.

This chapter examines the prison of nations metaphor in South Slavic online sources, focusing pa... more This chapter examines the prison of nations metaphor in South Slavic online sources, focusing particularly on its use and functions in contemporary Croatian discourse as reflected in the Croatian Web Corpus hrWaC. Assuming that certain metaphors in discourse are used consciously and deliberately, and making use of the notions of metaphor recontextualization and recycling, the chapter examines the evaluative force of the metaphor and its strategic use. The metaphor is shown to have different local functions (e.g., persuasion and delegitimization) and to be a shared resource for enacting everyday nationalism within political discourse generally and in the discourse of the political Right in particular.

This study examines the role of metaphor in the conceptualization of hope (nada) in the Croatian ... more This study examines the role of metaphor in the conceptualization of hope (nada) in the Croatian corpus hrWaC. Employing "metaphorical pattern analysis" (Ste-fanowitsch, 2006), I analyze metaphorical patterns with the target-domain word nada 'hope'. These patterns were extracted from a random sample of 1000 citations and additional citations retrieved based on the collocation candidates' list. The analysis shows that the conceptualization of hope in Croatian relates to approximately fifty metaphorical source domains. The most frequently utilized are object, container, and companion, which apply to many other emotions, disposi-tions, and states. The study builds on relevant research questions and findings on the conceptual representation of emotions and metaphors structuring emotions within cognitive linguistic research. It offers a basis for future qualitative studies about hope as a universal and culture-specific concept.

This article examines the visual representation of refugees on the Croatian public broadcaster’s ... more This article examines the visual representation of refugees on the Croatian public broadcaster’s (HRT) online portal during the so-called European refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016. A content analysis of 887 images is linked to the main research question of how refugees were represented and what this means for framing the refugee situation. I examine how the visual presentation of refugees relates to the dominant discourses on migration: discourses of victimhood or threat. The analysis concentrates on both the macro and micro levels following some assumptions of social semiotics, as well as research in psychology, media, and migration studies. The study finds that the visual presentation is strongly linked to the local context. The humanitarian approach and the visibilities of biological life and empathy were most prominent.

This article explores how migrants were visually presented during the so-called migration crisis in southeast Europe in the fall of 2015. It considers photographs from two public broadcasters’ news portals: Slovenia's rtvslo.si and Croatia's hrt.hr. The focus is on a specific category of images we label subjectless images; that is, images visually representing migrants and migration that avoid showing migrants as subjects. In these images, subjects are substituted by objects that metaphorically, metonymically, or symbolically stand for migrants and migration. The article explores the ideological operation of subjectless images, which operates through the logic of substituting human subjects with metaphorical, metonymic, and symbolic objects. What is presented to viewers as a certain object's mimetic image is explored within the production of a specific narrative and signification.

This article examines and compares the use of the discourse particle de and its variants in Bosni... more This article examines and compares the use of the discourse particle de and its variants in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and standard Turkish. BCS may not be the prototypical member of the Balkan Sprachbund, and standard Turkish is not a member at all, but the significant overlaps in use justify a comparative study of these languages and may suggest that Turkish has had a relatively strong influence on the Balkan languages when it comes to the use of this particle. A working hypothesis for future research could therefore be that the overlap is even greater when languages such as Modern Greek, Bulgarian and Balkan Turkic are included. In this article, however, we focus on BCS, represented in all relevant examples by Croatian, and standard Turkish, subsequently referred to as Turkish. Empirical material and examples are excerpted from corpora and databases, as well as from the literature and from compilations of informal writing on the Internet, such as anecdotes, jokes, and sayings

This article deals with the approach to the dative case in Kajkavian and Štokavian grammars from ... more This article deals with the approach to the dative case in Kajkavian and Štokavian grammars from 1604 to 1859. We concentrate on seventeen grammars, primarily focusing on their presentation of the meaning of the dative case. Remarks related to the meaning of the dative are mainly found in the parts of these grammars discussing syntax, and to a lesser extent in other parts. A significant feature of the majority of the grammars examined is their presentation of what modern grammars consider dative and locative (constructions) under the same umbrella of the dative case or the “third” case. The reason for this is a “morphology first” rule: the identical morphological form (in the singular) influenced grammarians’ conceptualization of what are considered typical dative constructions (e.g., those with the preposition k) and locative ones (e.g., those with the preposition u in static contexts) as dative constructions. This chapter investigates the verbal and visual representation of migration and migrants in Croatian and Serbian public broadcasters’ online portals during the “migrant crisis” in 2015/2016. The study shows that migrants are generally positively represented, which is congruent with the official policies of Croatia and Serbia. This positive representation was frequently used for positive self-evaluation of these countries’ influential social actors, and negative evaluation of neighboring countries. The chapter employs macro- and micro-linguistic analysis within the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis and multimodal analysis.

Interpreters in the public sector in Norway interpret in a variety of institutional encounters, a... more Interpreters in the public sector in Norway interpret in a variety of institutional encounters, and the interpreters evaluate the majority of these encounters as polite. However, some encounters are evaluated as impolite, and they pose challenges when it comes to interpreting impoliteness. This issue raises the question of whether interpreters should take a stance on their own evaluation of impoliteness and whether they should interfere in communication. In order to find out more about how interpreters cope with this challenge, in 2014 a survey was sent to all interpreters registered in the Norwegian Register of Interpreters. The survey data were analyzed within the theoretical framework of impoliteness theory using the notion of moral order as an explanatory tool in a close reading of interpreters’ answers. The analysis shows that interpreters reported using a variety of strategies for interpreting impoliteness, including omissions and downtoning. However, the interpreters also gave examples of individual strategies for coping with impoliteness, such as interrupting and postponing interpreting. These strategies border behavioral strategies and conflict with the Norwegian ethical guidelines for interpreting. In light of the ethical guidelines and actual practice, mapping and discussing different strategies used by interpreters might heighten interpreters’ and interpreter-users’ awareness of the role impoliteness can play in institutional interpreter– mediated encounters.

in Norway. Emphasis is placed on identity construction, integration and impoliteness strategies.
The material presented in this study was retrieved from a corpus which was collected as part
of a project devoted to national identity in immigration discourse. The method of analysis
presented in this paper follows Culpeper’s (1996) taxonomy of impoliteness strategies. The data
under inspection illustrate several types of positive and negative impoliteness. The results
of the study demonstrate that the Polish diaspora in Norway is only partially integrated and that
the language Poles use while writing both about the Norwegians and, in particular, about other
Poles is imbued with insults, negative associations and derogatory nominations.

This study compares the semantic networks of the verbal prefix u- in two South Slavic languages, ... more This study compares the semantic networks of the verbal prefix u- in two South Slavic languages, Bulgarian (Blg.) and Croatian (Cro.), in a cognitive linguistics framework using two databases of prefixed verbs drawn from dictionaries and corpora. We point to similarities and overlapping categories in the semantic networks of u- in Blg. and Cro., as well as to differences. When accounting for the differences, we consider prefixes semantically similar to u- (within one language and in both languages) that combine with the same base verbs forming either prefixed near-synonyms (e.g., Blg. uvehna, zavehna, izvehna ‘wither, fade’; Cro. umastiti, omastiti, zamastiti ‘grease, stain’) or prefixed verbs that are only seemingly near-synonyms (e.g., Blg. ukaža ‘indicate, show’, okaža se ‘turn out’; Cro. ocrniti ‘denigrate, slander’, ucrniti (se) ‘color black, wear black’). We examine how the meaning networks of individual semantically related prefixes (e.g., u- and za , iz-) overlap within one language and across the two languages, as well as how different construals of the same event affect the prefix choice.

This article analyzes the verbal prefix o(b)- in Croatian from a cognitive linguistic perspective... more This article analyzes the verbal prefix o(b)- in Croatian from a cognitive linguistic perspective, focusing on how its apparently different meanings relate to each other, and the extensions of its spatial meanings into non-spatial domains.
The prototypical meaning of verbs prefixed with o(b)- involves a general notion of circular movement realized in concrete spatial realms: a trajector (TR) performs a circular movement around a landmark (LM). This spatial schema of circular movement can be illustrated by the motion verb optrčati ‘make a full circle by running around a certain area’. Our analysis aims to show that the central meaning, move around (an object), has a special status in the meaning network because it directly or indirectly motivates all of the other meanings. We show that the various meanings of o(b)-verbs are not a random collection of unrelated senses, but form a semantic network in which individual meanings emerge via metaphorical and metonymic extensions and relate to systematic and partially predictable applications of concrete spatial relations to abstract ideas.

U radu se analizira glagolski prefix o(b)- u hrvatskome jeziku iz kognitivnolingvističke perspektive, s posebnim osvrtom na povezanost njegovih naizgled različitih značenja, te na proširenja njegovih prostornih značenja u neprostorne domene. Prototipno značenje glagola s prefiksom o(b)- uključuje ideju kružnoga kretanja u konkretnim prostornim domenama: trajektor (TR) se kružno kreće oko orijentira (LM). Ta se prostorna shema kružnoga kretanja može ilustrirati glagolom kretanja optrčati. Analiza ima za cilj pokazati da središnje značenje prefiksa o(b)-, kretanje oko, ima poseban status u značenjskoj mreži jer na izravan ili neizravan način motivira sva ostala značenja. U radu pokazujemo da različita značenja prefiksa o(b)- ne predstavljaju nasumičan zbir nepovezanih značenja, već da čine koherentnu značenjsku mrežu.

This chapter investigates the verbal and visual representation of migration and migrants in Croatian and Serbian public broadcasters’ online portals during the “migrant crisis” in 2015/2016. The study shows that migrants are generally positively represented, which is congruent with the official policies of Croatia and Serbia. This positive representation was frequently used for positive self-evaluation of these countries’ influential social actors, and negative evaluation of neighboring countries. The chapter employs macro- and micro-linguistic analysis within the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis and multimodal analysis.

Interpreters in the public sector in Norway interpret in a variety of institutional encounters, a... more Interpreters in the public sector in Norway interpret in a variety of institutional encounters, and the interpreters evaluate the majority of these encounters as polite. However, some encounters are evaluated as impolite, and they pose challenges when it comes to interpreting impoliteness. This issue raises the question of whether interpreters should take a stance on their own evaluation of impoliteness and whether they should interfere in communication. In order to find out more about how interpreters cope with this challenge, in 2014 a survey was sent to all interpreters registered in the Norwegian Register of Interpreters. The survey data were analyzed within the theoretical framework of impoliteness theory using the notion of moral order as an explanatory tool in a close reading of interpreters’ answers. The analysis shows that interpreters reported using a variety of strategies for interpreting impoliteness, including omissions and downtoning. However, the interpreters also gave examples of individual strategies for coping with impoliteness, such as interrupting and postponing interpreting. These strategies border behavioral strategies and conflict with the Norwegian ethical guidelines for interpreting. In light of the ethical guidelines and actual practice, mapping and discussing different strategies used by interpreters might heighten interpreters’ and interpreter-users’ awareness of the role impoliteness can play in institutional interpreter– mediated encounters.

in Norway. Emphasis is placed on identity construction, integration and impoliteness strategies.
The material presented in this study was retrieved from a corpus which was collected as part
of a project devoted to national identity in immigration discourse. The method of analysis
presented in this paper follows Culpeper’s (1996) taxonomy of impoliteness strategies. The data
under inspection illustrate several types of positive and negative impoliteness. The results
of the study demonstrate that the Polish diaspora in Norway is only partially integrated and that
the language Poles use while writing both about the Norwegians and, in particular, about other
Poles is imbued with insults, negative associations and derogatory nominations.

This study compares the semantic networks of the verbal prefix u- in two South Slavic languages, ... more This study compares the semantic networks of the verbal prefix u- in two South Slavic languages, Bulgarian (Blg.) and Croatian (Cro.), in a cognitive linguistics framework using two databases of prefixed verbs drawn from dictionaries and corpora. We point to similarities and overlapping categories in the semantic networks of u- in Blg. and Cro., as well as to differences. When accounting for the differences, we consider prefixes semantically similar to u- (within one language and in both languages) that combine with the same base verbs forming either prefixed near-synonyms (e.g., Blg. uvehna, zavehna, izvehna ‘wither, fade’; Cro. umastiti, omastiti, zamastiti ‘grease, stain’) or prefixed verbs that are only seemingly near-synonyms (e.g., Blg. ukaža ‘indicate, show’, okaža se ‘turn out’; Cro. ocrniti ‘denigrate, slander’, ucrniti (se) ‘color black, wear black’). We examine how the meaning networks of individual semantically related prefixes (e.g., u- and za , iz-) overlap within one language and across the two languages, as well as how different construals of the same event affect the prefix choice.

This article analyzes the verbal prefix o(b)- in Croatian from a cognitive linguistic perspective... more This article analyzes the verbal prefix o(b)- in Croatian from a cognitive linguistic perspective, focusing on how its apparently different meanings relate to each other, and the extensions of its spatial meanings into non-spatial domains.
The prototypical meaning of verbs prefixed with o(b)- involves a general notion of circular movement realized in concrete spatial realms: a trajector (TR) performs a circular movement around a landmark (LM). This spatial schema of circular movement can be illustrated by the motion verb optrčati ‘make a full circle by running around a certain area’. Our analysis aims to show that the central meaning, move around (an object), has a special status in the meaning network because it directly or indirectly motivates all of the other meanings. We show that the various meanings of o(b)-verbs are not a random collection of unrelated senses, but form a semantic network in which individual meanings emerge via metaphorical and metonymic extensions and relate to systematic and partially predictable applications of concrete spatial relations to abstract ideas.

U radu se analizira glagolski prefix o(b)- u hrvatskome jeziku iz kognitivnolingvističke perspektive, s posebnim osvrtom na povezanost njegovih naizgled različitih značenja, te na proširenja njegovih prostornih značenja u neprostorne domene. Prototipno značenje glagola s prefiksom o(b)- uključuje ideju kružnoga kretanja u konkretnim prostornim domenama: trajektor (TR) se kružno kreće oko orijentira (LM). Ta se prostorna shema kružnoga kretanja može ilustrirati glagolom kretanja optrčati. Analiza ima za cilj pokazati da središnje značenje prefiksa o(b)-, kretanje oko, ima poseban status u značenjskoj mreži jer na izravan ili neizravan način motivira sva ostala značenja. U radu pokazujemo da različita značenja prefiksa o(b)- ne predstavljaju nasumičan zbir nepovezanih značenja, već da čine koherentnu značenjsku mrežu.

This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters... more This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters of populist parties. Taking the 2019 European elections as their case study, the authors analyse how supporters in eleven different countries construct identities and voting motivations on social media. The individual chapters comprise a range of methods to investigate data from different social media platforms, defining populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between “the people”, who are unified by their will, and an out-group whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the out-group. The book identifies what motivates people to vote for populist parties, what role national identities and values play in those motivations, and how the social media postings of populist parties are recontextualised in supporters’ comments to serve as a voting motivation.

](Ova je knjiga uvodni pogled na paradigmu kognitivne lingvistike općenito s posebnim naglaskom na ... more Ova je knjiga uvodni pogled na paradigmu kognitivne lingvistike općenito s posebnim naglaskom na nekoliko tema obrađenih u deset poglavlja. Te teme smatramo temeljnima što zbog osobnog istraživačkog iskustva, a što na temelju strukture priručnika sličnoga tipa na drugim jezicima, no to ne znači da je obuhvaćeno sve što bi netko drugi smatrao temeljnim. Kao i u svakom izboru, ulogu su igrali i subjektivni faktori.
Knjiga je prvi uvod općega i preglednoga tipa u temeljne kognitivnolingvističke teme u Hrvatskoj. Iako je, naime, uz dosta znanstvenih radova posljednjih godina u Hrvatskoj izišao i određen broj akademskih monografija i uredničkih izdanja s kognitivnolingvističkom tematikom, a s tom je tematikom napisan i niz doktorata (pregled tih istraživanja donosimo u desetom poglavlju naše knjige), ipak smatramo da potreba za ovakvom knjigom još uvijek postoji: postojeće su studije zahtjevne i bave se specifičnim temama koje je teško pratiti bez određenoga predznanja iz kognitivne lingvistike. Nasuprot tome, ova je knjiga zamišljena kao tekst koji pretpostavlja osnovno predznanje o lingvističkim metodama i povijesti lingvistike, ali ne i kognitivnolingvističko predznanje. Zamišljena je kao polazište čiji je cilj omogućiti ili olakšati pristup tematski specifičnim te metodološki složenijim kognitivnolingvističkim radovima. Cilj nam je bio uputiti čitatelja u temeljna pitanja i spoznaje, ponuditi mu uvid u široki raspon tema uz popratne smjernice i zadatke, kako bi onda svatko na temelju te osnovne, no nadajmo se ipak dovoljno informativne građe, mogao odlučiti na koji se segment prikazane slike fokusirati.

The central idea is that metaphor use must be questioned to lay bare the processes and the discursive power behind them. The chapters examine a range of contemporary and historical, monomodal and multimodal discourses, including politicians’ discourse, presidential speeches, newspapers, TV series, Catholic homilies, colonialist discourse, and various online sources. The approaches taken include political science, international relations, cultural studies, and linguistics. All contributions feature discursive constructivist views of metaphor, with clear sociocultural grounding, and the notion of metaphor as a framing device in constructing various aspects of nations and national identity. The volume will appeal to scholars in discourse analysis, metaphor studies, media studies, nationalism studies, and political science.

The focus of this book is how Slavic languages represent spatial relations, and how spatial cogni... more The focus of this book is how Slavic languages represent spatial relations, and how spatial cognition and perception influence the understanding and linguistic coding of nonspatial domains. Individual analyses concentrate on the semantics of selected prepositions and cases in Bosnian/ Croatian/ Serbian (B/ C/ S), providing a comparative perspective on other Slavic languages, primarily Russian and Polish. The opening analysis discusses the main theoretical notion - metaphorical extension - exemplifying the relation of spatial usages of linguistic items to non-spatial usages. This is followed by an analysis of the most basic spatial relations, "in-ness" and "on-ness." The meaning network of prepositions equivalent to on and in helps explain the meaning of the cases they combine with: the accusative and locative. Another crucial spatial relation, proximity, is taken into account in the semantic analysis of the B/ C/ S prepositions kod and pri, their Slavic equivalents, and cases they combine with: the genitive and locative. The next chapter deals with the spatial meaning of the dative case, examining dative's prepositional usages, the bare directional dative in B/ C/ S, and the semantic relation of the bare directional dative to other meaning domains of this case.

This volume examines the discursive construction of identity related to important national holidays in nine countries of Central Europe and the Balkans: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, and Slovakia. The chapters focus on the decades during which these countries moved from communism towards democracy and a market economy. This transition saw revivals of national values and a new significance of regional and transnational ties, entangled with negotiations of national identity that have been particularly lively in discourse concerning national holidays.
The chapters apply discourse analysis in addition to approaches from history, sociology, political science, and anthropology. All of the analyses make use of empirical material in the Slavic languages, including newspaper articles, interviews and other media contributions, sermons, addresses, and speeches by members of the political elite.

Na vrh jezika vam je riječ koja vam baš treba za određenu misao? Ne možete se sjetiti konteksta u kojem se upotrebljava određena riječ? Rješenje se nalazi u Rječniku sinonima hrvatskoga jezika. Rječnik je sastavljen od dva dijela. U prvom dijelu su abecedno poredane natuknice i njihovi sinonimni nizovi. Drugi je dio rječnika indeks. U njemu se nalaze jedinice navedene u sklopu sinonimnih nizova u prvome dijelu.
U rječnik su uvrštene i riječi iz razgovornoga jezika, regionalizmi u široj uporabi te općepoznati žargonizmi. Naime, standardna ili bi rana riječ nije u svakoj situaciji prava i najprihvatljivija. Situacija, stajalište pisca ili govornika te nakana poruke uvjetuju izbor riječi koje pripadaju različitim stilističkim i funkcionalnim razinama. Rječnik sinonima stoga je namijenjen svakome tko želi obogaćivati vlastite jezične izražajne mogućnosti, kao što su primjerice: učenici, studenti, prevoditelji, novinari, redaktori, pisci, lektori, stranci koji uče hrvatski, tj. svima koji se na bilo koji način bave pisanjem, riječima i njihovim mogućim zamjenama.

An... more Cilj je ovoga rada rasvjetljivanje osnovnih problema antonimije u suvremenom hrvatskom jeziku. Antonimijom se bave mnogi teorijski semantički, leksikološki i leksikografski opisi svjetskih jezika u razradi paradigmatskih i sintagmatskih odnosa u leksiku i strukture semantičkih polja. Nezaobilazno se problem antonimije dodiruje u sklopu opisa semantičkih kategorija kao što su polisemija, homonimija i sinonimija. Unatoč brojnosti i raznolikosti jedinica, leksik je definiran sustav unutar cjelokupnoga jezičnoga sustava, a antonimija je jedna od stalnica leksičkih odnosa.
Temelj je ovom radu moj magistarski rad o antonimiji u hrvatskom jeziku. Prije njegova nastanka bilo je malo rasprava koje su se teorijski bavile suprotnošću leksičkih značenja. Prvotni je tekst prerađen, proširen i dopunjen spoznajama o antonimiji do kojih sam došla u radovima nastalima izvan okvira magistarskog rada ili nakon njega.

U njoj su skupljeni, po kvantifikacijskim kriterijima razvrstani i s logičkoga gledišta opisani svi relevantni izrazi za iskazivanje eksplicitne kvantifikacije u hrvatskom jeziku. Pisana kao monografija može poslužiti kao solidan temelj za sva buduća proučavanja kvantifikacije u hrvatskome.

This article addresses means of expressing and implying emotions (Langlotz and Locher 2012) in ... more This article addresses means of expressing and implying emotions (Langlotz and Locher 2012) in realizations of impoliteness in written discourse thematizing language and identity in Croatian and Montenegrin media in 2010 and 2011. Realizations of impoliteness often relate to communicating an emotional stance that can trigger emotional responses in readers. Our discourse sample can be described as „„disputes about language and identity” (see Felberg and Šarić 2013), which is largely characterized by conflictual disagreements. Conflictual disagreements, as Jones (2001) or Langlotz and Locher (2012) put it, do not leave one cold in face-to-face interaction: they arouse feelings of annoyance, irritation, anger, or contempt directed to the communicative partner. These observations are relevant in our context, although we deal with written discourse. The main participants in our data include well-known intellectuals, journalists, and editors. They all defend or attack a position in discussing, among other things, „how similar «our» language (Croatian/Montenegrin) is to «their» language” (Serbian), and „what makes this language (Croatian/Montenegrin) a distinctive and independent entity.” These participants clearly position themselves in relation to other participants. Their positioning of the self and the other person involves negative identity-ascribing practices. Taking into consideration parameters such as the role of participants in discourse and society, the context, co-text, and activity types in which discourse participants engaged, we identified various highly context-dependent types and functions of impoliteness realizations (see Šarić and Felberg, forthcoming). Contrary to our expectations, the participants in the media discourse in both countries frequently use impoliteness both strategically and systematically while defending their positions. The impoliteness realizations point to emotively significant places in discourse. Their use has several functions: a prominent one is coercion through legitimizing one’s own standpoints and delegitimizing those of one’s opponents.

The material includes articles containing keywords meaning "immigration', "migration', "refugees', "migrants', and "immigrants' (Cro. migracija, migranti, izbjeglice).
Among the 1,347 images analyzed for content in the first round, around 20% are subjectless images, in which migrants are (almost) absent: these photos are the focus of this analysis. In these images, migrant subjects are mostly substituted by various objects. The main research question concerns the role of visual metonymy, metaphor, and symbols in these subjectless images. The methods used are approaches to the visual presentation of social actors (van Leeuwen 2008), and visual metaphor and metonymy (El Refaie 2003; Forceville & Urios-Aparisi 2009; Catalano & Waugh 2013).
The initial results indicate that the role of visual metonymies, metaphors, and symbols seems to be to shift responsibility, thereby hiding or blurring the underlying power relations, replacing the complex human individuality with broad, impersonal generalizations, and facilitating emotional detachment in potential viewers.

The topic of this study is impoliteness in online comments (that is, readers’ responses) in two S... more The topic of this study is impoliteness in online comments (that is, readers’ responses) in two South Slavic newspapers, comparable in terms of their readership and profile: a Croatian daily Jutarnji list, and a Serbian daily Večernje novosti. The data –in total 668 comments -- are drawn from postings triggered by four articles published in December 2016.
The existing research indicates that identifiability and accountability comes with commenting via Facebook, and that impolite communicative behaviour in reader comments is significantly more common on Websites where users are able to maintain their anonymity. With Facebook comments, commenters are identified with, and accountable for, the content they produce. However, my findings do not confirm this. The share of the impolite comments is higher in the newspaper that uses Facebook comments. Facebook users may, of course, construct fictious selves (and many in my corpus do so – there are some clear cases of invented names (e.g., Platon Aristotel).
I also examined the relationship between platform type and the direction of impoliteness, starting with a hypothesis that Facebook comments will exhibit less interpersonal impoliteness than Website comments. This assumption has not been confirmed either.
When it comes to identity, disaffiliation is mainly constructed through highly negative and stigmatizing descriptions of those considered to belong to an out-group: here, another national group (Serbs or Croats). These descriptions are related to different impoliteness realizations, often “direct”. However, impoliteness, albeit more indirect, is applied when constructing disaffiliation from some in-group members that are judged to behave in a manner that the posters consider inappropriate. The construction of in-groups versus out-groups is likely to saliently rely on positive impoliteness strategies (that dominate in this sample).
The posters strategically used impoliteness expressed through overtly impolite remarks. They used blatant face-aggravation, and hence impoliteness, to communicate disagreement, to argue against some perceived attitude of in-group members, and against the out-group’s assumed ideological views and behavior, or to discredit ideological opponents.
The findings indicate that the overall topic of newspaper articles relates to frequency and direction of impoliteness realizations in readers responses. Furthermore, commenters’ collective identity certainly seems relevant to a clear understanding of impoliteness in deindividuated contexts, such as this one, in which posters construct a salient social, collective identity. This finding is in line with some existing analyses of online readers response and You tube discussions.

This presentation is part of my analysis of media presentations of Croatian Prime Minister Jadran... more This presentation is part of my analysis of media presentations of Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor. The material examined is the news sections of two widely read internet portals: the daily Jutarnji list and tportal.hr. Like Croatian media in general, both are characterized by tabloidization (Ršumović 2009). I examined 111 texts from July 2009, the first weeks when Jadranka Kosor served as prime minister. These selected texts mention the prime minister’s name or function in their most prominent parts—that is, kickers, headlines, subheads, and leads—and/or show her in photographs. The theoretical frameworks I apply are approaches to evaluation in texts (e.g., Hunston & Thompson 2003), approaches to multimodality (e.g., Kress & Leeuven 2006), and some elements of political discourse analysis (Chilton 2004).
My sample material confirms existing findings on media presentation of female politicians. It shows that the media have perpetuated sexist and gender stereotypes. It seems that in the Croatian (media) world, female politicians are certainly seen through different lenses than men. The media seem to be uncomfortable with the idea of women as political leaders.

U ovom preglednom poglavlju osvrnut ćemo se u prvom redu na teme kognitivnolingvističkih radova k... more U ovom preglednom poglavlju osvrnut ćemo se u prvom redu na teme kognitivnolingvističkih radova koji se bave hrvatskim jezikom: ili se njime bave ekskluzivno, ili im je jedna komponenta hrvatski jezik bilo da uzimaju u obzir druge slavenske jezike, bilo neke druge jezike. Osvrnut ćemo se i na neke radove inozemnih istraživača koji se barem dijelom osvrću na hrvatski jezik, kao i na teme radova hrvatskih autora koji se bave kognitivnom lingvistikom općenito. Samo je dio radova posvećen (među ostalim) hrvatskom objavljen na hrvatskom jeziku, dok je velik dio radova objavljen na engleskom jeziku, a poneki i na drugim jezicima. Ipak, u novije je vrijeme objavljeno nekoliko knjiga s kognitivnolingvističkom tematikom na hrvatskome, što će nadamo se pridonijeti ne samo upoznavanju s metodologijom kognitivne lingvistike i otvaranju novih područja istraživanja, nego i usustavljivanju terminologije.

U ovom ćemo se poglavlju osvrnuti na taj okvir, teoriju konceptualne integracije, i njezin analitički aparat, mrežu konceptualne integracije te njezine sastavnice, ulazne prostore, generički prostor i integrirani prostor. Nadalje, opisat ćemo tipove integracijskih mreža, te se usredotočiti na neke primjere konceptualne integracije u jezičnim primjerima te u vizualnom izražavanju. Kako se kao konceptualna integracija često opisuju fenomeni mišljenja i izražavanja koji bi se mogli opisati i kao metafore, posebno ćemo se osvrnuti na odnos teorije konceptualne metafore i teorije konceptualne integracije. Na kraju ćemo se osvrnuti i na poseban tip leksema koji objašnjava ova teorija, leksičke stopljenice.

Nakon napomena o tradicionalnom poimanju metonimije, ukazujemo na ključne teme i pitanja u vezi s metonimijom kojima su se bavila kognitivnolingvistička istraživanja. Počinjemo od promišljanja Georgea Lakoffa i Marka Johnsona (1980) na koja su se nastavila mnoga kasnija istraživanja koja su se bavila referencijalnom metonimijom. Osvrćemo se na načela koja upravljaju metonimijama, te pojašnjavamo konstrukte kojima se u kognitivnolingvističkim istraživanjima opisivalo metonimijske odnose: domene, matrice domena, scenarije, okvire i idealizirane kognitivne modele. Osvrćemo se i na odnos metonimije s metaforom, te na pitanje je li bit metonimijskih odnosa preslikavanje, ili nešto drugo (isticanje domene, njezino proširivanje ili sužavanje). Poglavlje završava osvrtom na metonimiju u vizualnom i multimodalnom izražavanju.

Shvaćanje metafore u kognitivnoj lingvistici značajno je obilježilo pristup tom fenomenu i u drugim disciplinama, a ne samo lingvistici, od osamdesetih godina dvadesetog stoljeća pa sve do danas. Osvrnut ćemo se na neke prethodnike kognitivnolingvističkog pristupa, te ukazati na sličnosti i razlike u njihovu shvaćanju metafore u odnosu na kognitivnolingvistički pristup kojem je posvećen glavni dio ovog poglavlja.1 U tom se dijelu poglavlja osvrćemo na glavne kategorije i postavke teorije konceptualne metafore Σ izvorne i ciljne domene, te preslikavanja Σ ilustrirajući izlaganje brojnim primjerima. Završni su dijelovi poglavlja posvećeni pitanju motiviranosti konceptualnih metafora i njihovoj psihološkoj realnosti, vizualnoj i multimodalnoj metafori, te metafori u diskursu.
