COURli...” to the high-pitched “curLEE-curLEE,” its calls can be heard year-round, whether it’s a warning, contact call, or a sign of excitement. 🎶 IUCN Red List status: globally Near Threatened. Today is #WorldCassowaryDay! The Southern Cassowary is one of Australia’s most iconic birds. Not only are they an impressive sight, but they are also incredibly important for the ecosystems they inhabit. 💡Did you know that Australia’s Southern Cassowary isn’t the only cassowary? There are two other species not found in Australia: the Northern Cassowary and the Dwarf Cassowary. 🐦Have you ever wondered about the horn-like helmet on their heads? That’s called a casque, and for many years, its purpose has been a mystery. However, scientists now believe it helps them stay cool in the summer heat. 🌳Southern Cassowaries are rainforest gardeners! They play a crucial role in maintaining rainforest health and biodiversity. They help disperse seeds in their poo, which in turn acts as nutrient-rich compost to help germinate them, too! 📸Southern Cassowary by Jun Matsui, Patrick Tomkins and Gigi Williams#Birds #Cassowary #BirdLifeOz #BirdLifeAustralia #Nature - The Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) provides data, tools and guidance that help organisations act on biodiversity related risks and opportunities, and generates sustainable funding to support biodiversity datasets. 🐦📊 This biodiversity data results in organisations taking positive action for nature. 💚 IBAT is an Alliance between us, UNEP-WCMC, the IUCN and Conservation International.
IBAT is excited to announce a new collaboration with Natcap who have integrated IBAT's world's leading biodiversity datasets into their nature intelligence platform. Natcap empowers its customers with comprehensive data on threatened species, protected areas, and key biodiversity areas, essential for understanding and mitigating nature-related risks. All within one platform! 🌿 Beccy Wilebore, NatCap's Chief Science Officer, said: “IBAT’s datasets are a significant addition to our platform. The integrity of the data, from the world leading organisations for biodiversity conservation, will enable our scientists to deliver the highest quality insights for our customers and, ultimately, mean that businesses can make better decisions for nature and their operations.” Visit www.natcapresearch.com to learn more.Edward Ellis, Head of IBAT, said: “I’m delighted by the collaboration between IBAT and Natcap. The incorporation of protected areas, Key Biodiversity Areas and threatened species into Natcap’s nature intelligence platform will help businesses better understand their potential impact on the natural world, and help expand the role that biodiversity data can have in guiding decision making across different sectors and industries.” Visit: www.ibat-alliance.org to learn more#Biodiversity #NatureTech #Sustainability #IBAT #naturepositive #investments - 📣 Join a Global movement for people and nature. The good news is that we know the money is there. The world now spends $2.6trn every year on subsidies to industries that destroy nature. Redirecting even a small portion of these subsidies can help create positive investments for biodiversity which will benefit our own prosperity. BirdLife International will be working hard with other NGOs in the run to and beyond the Biodiveristy COP 16 in Colombia next month to ensure governments deliver on their promises made in Montreal in 2022 when they agreed the Global Biodiveristy Framework.
