The human variable is back in the loop of complex Mixed Reality systems design and is positioned at the core of the narrative through the participation of users as "interactors".

Recently, a growing number of Mixed Reality applications have included interaction with virtual actors and storytelling. However, AI-based Interactive Storytelling techniques have not yet been explored in the context of Mixed Reality. In this paper, we describe a fully-integrated first prototype based upon the adaptation of an Interactive Storytelling technique to a Mixed Reality system. After a description of the real time image processing techniques that support the creation of a hybrid environment, we introduce the storytelling technique and the essential modalities of user interactions in the Mixed Reality context. Finally, we illustrate these experiments by discussing examples obtained from the system.

Causality plays an important role in our construction of reality and, as such, it makes sense to use it as a principle to define VR experiences. We have developed a VR platform using cognitive data on causal perception to create artificial event co-occurrences in virtual worlds, which can be perceived as possible outcomes for user actions. After a preliminary validation of this technology by user experiments, it has been used to implement prototypes of artistic installations by two different artists. We describe the technical approach behind the elicitation of causal perception in virtual reality, and illustrate its use through the two artistic installations being developed with this new VR platform.

An apparatus for communication/entertainment mixing synthetic and natural images in real-time is designed and allows the "user" to be captured through vision-based sensors, like (web) cameras. The composed visual scenes are to be experienced in physical spaces and/or to be viewed through web browsers. The word "transfiction" has been coined to this interactive narrative system where users can interact with narrative machines (devices with computing power and containing databases of meaningful information).
