This paper analyzes the relationship from the perspective of visitors to the Teide National Park (TNP) in Tenerife, aiming to establish strategies to reduce visitors' environmental impacts. This is particularly important as the TNP, with over 3,000,000 visitors in 2015, is the most visited park in Spain and one of the most visited in Europe. An empirical study was conducted during 2016 resulting in 805 valid questionnaires. A CHAID algorithm was then applied to segment visitors according to criterion variables. Findings show the first segmenting variable is transport type, with the car being the most frequently used by visitors. Specifically, the visitor segment coming by car is also associated with the longest stays in the TNP. Regarding the practical and social implications, it is assumed the longer the stay, the greater the envi...

Therefore, it has been measured the relationship between the variables of quality, satisfaction and existence of industrial disputes in the tourist accommodations of the state of Mérida, Venezuela. A stratified probability sampling and the use of Servqual scale showed a close positive association between the job satisfaction of customer service employees and the service quality, especially during the high tourism season. It was also evidenced during this season that the highest levels of service quality were in those establishments whose employees presented high levels of satisfaction and moderate absence of conflicts.

The empirical study consisted of a questionnaire answered by 154 tourism promoters. Results showed a higher percentage of promoters belonging to an association during the Covid-19. There was a link between receiving training and belonging to an association and a significant relationship between participation in associations and receiving public funds, this relationship being found more among male promoters. On the other hand, a higher score was given by women for the advantages of networking, and mainly for the following: ‘Simplifies the management of booking’.

Two-Step Cluster Analysis and CHAID approaches to the determination of market segmentation are used. This study demonstrates the precision and multitree nature of CHAID analysis in that it offers additional levels of variation and distinctiveness for those marketing and managing tourism generally, and in the specific context of state parks. Rather than managing a homogenous "rural tourist", through CHAID analysis, state parks can benefit from the fine-tuning of marketing messages, the more effective provision and location of accommodation stock, and enhanced efforts to attract out-of-state visitors.

The need to have a significant number of segments and qualifying variables has led, however, to the use of other procedures of multivariate analysis. CHAID (Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detection), which is more complex than other multivariate techniques, has rarely been used. This study applies the traditional methods of multivariate analysis and CHAID to the same population of tourists visiting a particular destination to compare the quality of the information obtained on tourism market segmentation. The results suggest that the analysis based on CHAID matches the nature of the problem studied better than those provided by discriminant analysis.

In the present study we consider the role played by gender, individual career aspirations and school characteristics in young people's subject choice in the education system of the Canary Islands (Spain). Specifically, the results indicate that, as a rule, Humanities are chosen by female students who hope to obtain employment in a subordinate post and who study in nonurban public schools in which the careers teacher is not part of the management team. In the other hand, Science & Technology are chosen by men who study in urban private schools in which the careers teacher is part of the management team, and their main occupational aspiration is a managerial position.

A particular case is that of the mismatches in urban labour markets, which can result in substantial differences in the employment opportunities available in city centres and suburbs. This study examines the spatial mismatches presented in the labour market of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. To that end, the results of a survey taken in 2003-2004 of a sample of 2000 city residents were reviewed. Results confirm the importance of transport policy for city residents; they suggest that public transport linking the different districts to the city centre should be reviewed.

Research paper thumbnail of Desire of a Managerial Position and Entrepreneurial Motivation: The Influence of Gender and School Type in the Canary Islands Young People

iBusiness, 2011

Understanding the factors that determine and influence the choices male and females students make... more Understanding the factors that determine and influence the choices male and females students make with regard to their studies and future occupations plays a crucial part in the explanation of earnings levels, from both the social and individual perspectives. These factors need to be taken into account in policies to be implemented in order to facilitate the transition of young people to working life. In the present study we consider the role played by the type of school-i.e. whether it is public (state-run) or private-in young people's decisions, in the Canary Islands (Spain). Specifically we study if that factor is influencing male and female students' entrepreneurial motivation and the desire for a managerial occupation. A representative selection of the range of secondary schools was taken for our empirical study, and logistic regression was used, which allows qualitative variables to be included among the predictive variables and enables the analysis of dichotomy phenomena. The desire for a supervisory/managerial occupation and the entrepreneurial motivation are found to be heavily influenced by the type of school (public or private) and in some cases by gender. Specifically, a notable finding of our study is that women tend to show less preference for a supervisory position in their future career, particularly if they have attended a public school.

The present study takes a segmented market approach to study the Canary Islands tourism market, featuring a range of tourism products, each of which satisfies to a greater or lesser extent the needs of one segment of demand. It has two objectives: firstly, to ascertain which segments of demand are currently acquired at destination and secondly, to identify within these segments the niches associated with the highest expenditure. This will enable us to draw up guideliness for a regional policy on product innovation that focuses on these niches and thus generates higher levels of local development.

The present study examines the rural tourism market on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) and its relationship with territorial factors and variables. Specifically, it attempts to establish the role played in tourists’ accommodation location choice by territorial and related factors (for instance, the area of the island, proximity to the beach, hours of sunshine, etc) compared to other factors. A sample of 316 tourists who holidayed in rural tourism accommodation on La Palma during the period July-September 2007 was selected for this purpose. The methodology consisted of a preliminary analysis of the associations between the variables and their modalities, followed by a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). The res...

The strong expansion of the services sector that tourism development has produced in parallel constitutes a logical consequence of an activity such as tourism characterised to be basic (Begg, 1993), that is to say, to present very strong effects on other economic activities. It is in fact the economic importance of tourism in the Canary Islands that has lead local authorities to consider the maintenance and improvement of competitiveness levels in tourism in the field of the domestic and international market (Government of Canaries, 1998). The maintenance and improvement of competitiveness levels depend on the segmentation...

For a few celebrated matrices, e.g., the Hilbert matrix and the Cesàro matrix, the precise value of the norm is known. But, for many other important cases we use estimated values of norm. In this note, we study the norm of L-matrices A = [a n ] , which appear in studying Hadamard multipliers of function spaces. We provide some necessary and sufficient conditions for the finiteness of norm and study the sharpness of these conditions. In particular, for the decay rate a n = O(1/n α) , our characterization is complete. Finally, parallel to the above classical results of Hilbert and Cesàro, we succeed to show that A s = 4 for the family of L-matrices A s = [1/(n + s)] , irrelevant of the parameter s which runs over [1/2,∞) .
