Heidegger contributed to the study of an-archaeology by postulating a new beginning that, despite being a beginning, is not capable of grounding anything. This second beginning is more primordial than the first, which is the basis of metaphysics and its effects in the history of intelligence. The second beginning is not a foundation, an arché, but the an-arché that underlies physis. In analogy to Heidegger's underlying abyss of beyng, there is a more primordial otherness (Xeinos) underneath any Other we meet (Xenos). In order to conceive this second beginning of Xeinos, I mobilize the notion of forest (urihi a) as formulated by Kopenawa and Valentim. What emerges is a framework for a history of otherness, a history of Xeinos as a cosmopolitical narrative.

Antimonotonic systems are such that no addition in the premises can preserve conclusions. Further, antimonotonic systems are not only paraconsistent but also minimal in an important sense. Antimonotonicity is also a crucial feature of what Derrida intended by his idea of a logic of supplement.

A salient and attractive feature of the virtue approach in epistemology is that it is capable of placing human knowledge within a realm of genuinely epistemic phenomena in the world. Zagrzebski (2003) diagnoses that we are entering an askeptical period where the threat of skepticism is taken as dissolved or innocuous and epistemologists turn their eye to the connection between knowledge and the rest of the world by seeing knowledge within a more general context of practices with truth and action guidance. A symptom of this askeptical turnor at least of the move towards seeing human knowledge within a broader epistemic realm-is the widespread use of expressions like animal knowledge as basis for comparison with human epistemic endeavors and norms. Philosophers have found themselves having to provide reasons to justify accounts of knowledge that cater for no more than the human experience.

After considering the connections between exteriority and epistemic abundance, the Coda analyses the impact of Potosí, where the book was (partially) elaborated, in the situated metaphysics that emerges and in the notion of proximity that is recommended. The Potosí principle – the idea that the extraction of silver in the mountain of Sumaq Urqo was crucial for the development of modern practices – and Rivera Cusicanqui’s notion of ch’ixi – that each way of thinking is tainted by others that are never fully integrated – are then discussed in the indexicalist context. The Coda and the book closes with some remarks about absolute deixis in its connection to contingency, situatedness and plurality.

Substantive descriptions are appropriate to think things through only to the extent that they have an implicit indexicality. Indexical expressions are context-dependent and therefore thoroughly situated. Indexicalism is a paradoxico-metaphysics in the terms defined by Cogburn; it can also be seen as a critique of metaphysics if metaphysics aims at a general, substantive view of how things are and they are such that no substantive description is adequate. Indexicalism draws from elements of Whitehead’s philosophy of the organism – especially the notion of locus standi in the theory of measurement – of Levinas’ account of the asymmetric Other and of Perry and Kaplan’s work on demonstratives and implicit indexicality. An indexicalist image of things has no space for total, third-person views of everything. The postulated absolute is deictic.

The analysis the others as an indexical entail a recommendation of the injunction formulated by Anna Tsing: tell the world with the best of one’s capacities and leave space in the ground for alternative narratives. The injunction, in its turn, is connected to Amerindian perspectivism and its insistence in the deictic character of any narrative. The metaphysics of the others is contrasted to Meillassoux’s speculative materialism and a method of bound speculation is then outlined. The chapter engages with Deleuze’s analysis of Michel Tournier’s Robinson Crusoe to discuss how the others relate to the Great Outdoors. In order to step from the Levinasian Other to the Great Outdoors, two approaches are examined: the one around Silvia Benso’s attempt to expand Levinas’ approach to faces to all things and the one provided by Jacques Derrida’s notion of ‘supplement’.

As a consequence, substantive descriptions have an implicit indexicality to them. This situated metaphysics emerges from a reading together of Emmanuel Levinas and Alfred N. Whitehead informed both by work on demonstratives in the philosophy of language and by some tenets of Amerinidian perspectivism. The recommended indexicalist metaphysics of the others is a paradoxico-metaphysics which is simultaneously a metaphysics – according to which things are ultimately indexical – and a critique of metaphysics – no substantive account of reality is possible. In contrast with images of reality aimed at a totality, an indexicalist account is one where there is an incompleteness that enables an active role for the Great Outdoors. Indexicalism is thought through in contrast with some forms of Speculative Realism and understands speculation as something that needs to be mended by the interruption of the exterior. Taking the deictic category of “other” seriously, the book provides an account of receptivity as hospitality that contrasts with most post-Kantian approaches to perceptual experience. The concern with the others have resonances in the discussions concerning the post-colonial and the debates concerning thought and action as being unescapably situated. In contrast with relational ontologies, indexicalism takes the asymmetry that places the others outside as a point of departure.

This is where we start. Or maybe, this is where we have started. Beginnings carry some authority: this is how everything started. That authority is encapsulated in the word ἀρχή-foundation, commencement, command. The very activity of reasoning-and perhaps the effort of thinking-seems to amount to a quest for an ἀρχή. This is why Emmanuel Levinas claimed that the term archaeology is a redundance: 1 the quest for an ἀρχή is ultimately what any quest is about and, conversely, it is nowhere but in λόγος-that is, in arguments, in reason, in thought or in discourse-that an ἀρχή as the remote beginning resides. The authority that is sought in the starting point is prior to where the quest starts-either in the order of time or in the order of reasons (or of thoughts). Archaeology-or simply the exercise of λόγος-is to revert the arrow, either the arrow of time or the arrow of consequence. It should start with what is deemed to be the end-the result, the product, the effect-and proceed on a journey into what precedes it. An issue, of course, is that an ἀρχή is not luminous: it is not self-evident that we have certainly reached bedrock.

Abstract: Viruses are understood as units of command. The coronavirus is compared with capital in terms akin to its descriptions offered by Deleuze and Guattari and by Nick Land. As a consequence, humans find themselves between a stream and a rock ("zwischen Strom und Gestein")-between the organic, the terrestrial on the one hand and the artificial, the cybernetic on the other. This predicament gives rise to a bifurcation of pan-political consequences: should humans make alliance with the organic or rather should they invest fully on the building of the artificial? The bifurcation makes room for two competing pan-political parties each of which have multiple tendencies, both to the political left and to the political right.

Coalitions between these parties are challenging but some alliances are described and a new way to bring together the left of two of these parties is proposed.
