Its main contention is that the agnomen FELIX on RRC 426/1-2 should not be regarded as an explicative legend, marking the ‘Sullan’ types as opposed to those related to Faustus’ persona. FELIX should be seen, on the contrary, as an onomastic element of Faustus himself. This weakens the relevance of the stylistic chiasmus in the light of which Faustus Sulla’s coinage has mostly been interpreted until today. A new discussion of the obverse of RRC 426/2 is thus put forward, arguing for the identification of the male bust with Hercules and, more precisely, for an imitation of the Tyrian coinage coeval with Faustus’ issues (as already argued by Lydia H. Lenaghan).

Cassius Caeicianus (RRC 321, 100 BCE). In all likelihood, both the natural and the adoptive family of Caeicianus were of equestrian, non-senatorial status. Even though they should not be interpreted as means of propaganda, his coin types suggest that he was politically associated with L. Apuleius Saturninus and/or Gaius Marius. No other L. Cassius is known in these years, except for the members of the noble Cassii Longini and the tribune of the plebs of 89 BCE, responsible for stirring up the creditors against the urban praetor L. Sempronius Asellio, who had safeguarded the debtors and ended up being lynched. On the basis of our knowledge, it is reasonable to assume that Caeicianus and the tribune L. Cassius were the same person. Together, these pieces of information allow us to outline the political activity of a member of the broader Roman upper class in the years between Saturninus’ tribunates and the Social War, filled with social, political and economic distress.

Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus to the Greek East. Based on an analysis of the main sources on the embassy (the excerpta Constantiniana of Diodorus Siculus, Cicero’s Lucullus and De re publica, as well as the works of Plutarch and Strabo), the paper argues that the traditional reconstruction, which has been defended most of all by Alan E. Astin, who argued that the embassy took place in 140-139 BCE, after Scipio’s censorship, must be considered the right one, forcing us to reject the revisionist attempt of Harold B. Mattingly to date the embassy
prior to Aemilianus’ censorship.

This paper discusses in detail some salient leitmotifs of Napoleon’s reflections and views. Its main contention is that Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus (cos. 96 BCE) could not be both the commissioner and one of the three Domitii honoured by the monument. It is likely that these Domitii were the first three consuls of the family (192, 162, 122). Münzer did not analyse Roman politics merely from a prosopographical perspective that narrowly focused on partisan struggles. On the contrary, he put forward a more complex interpretation of the historical development of Republican Rome and its aristocracy, keenly sensitive to ideological, social, and even ‘policy-related’ aspects. In this paper, I intend, firstly, to identify and explain the centres of gravity of Münzer’s analysis; secondly, to reconsider the definition of the arcana imperii of the Roman aristocracy and point out the aspects that reveal a more structured and deeper interpretation of the levers of power of the Roman Republic by Münzer.

This article attempts a new discussion of the evidence. Its main contention is that A. Postumius Albinus, cos. 99, should be distinguished from the homonymous legate, brother of Sp. Postumius Albinus, cos. 110; that the two moneyers A. Postumii Albini were, in all likelihood, not directly related to each other and were probably sons of the last two consuls of the family; and, as a consequence, that at least two lines of descent between the second and the first century BCE can be discerned. On the basis of these results, a new stemma of the ancient patrician family of the Albini is put forward.

On the one hand, Caracalla reclaimed the exemplum Sullanum displayed by his father, and sought to lead fruitfully the edgy relationships with the Roman political class also through the political role-model embodied by Sulla; on the other hand, by activating the cultural and historical heritage of Alexander in the hellenophone and Near Eastern provinces, the Emperor aimed to interact effectively with the local communities, elites, and populations.

The first section restates the probable belonging of Cordus to the Mucii Scaevolae family. Nevertheless, although the majority of scholars currently follows Crawford’s identification of Cordus with Publius Mucius Scaevola (pontifex ca. 72-60 BC), the so far-ignored Gaius Mucius Scaevola, the younger brother of Publius, who lived in the first half of the first century BC, could be an ideal candidate as well. The second section discusses the interpretation of the coin types: while the obverse representation of Italia and Roma alludes, as is known, to the census carried out in 70/69 BC, the jugate heads of Honos and Virtus, personifications associated in particular with Gaius Marius, probably recall the seven times consul. This mixture of themes attributable to Pompeian and Marian entourages can be easily explained by taking into consideration the figures of Fufius Calenus and Scaevola Cordus – the former a well-known popularis politician, and the latter the brother-in-law of Pompey.

Herennius issued denarii which bore the portrait of Pietas on the obverse and one of the Catanean brothers carrying his parent on the reverse. This article aims to demonstrate that previous interpretations of these types as narrow allusions to the history of the gens are fallacious. Accordingly, new arguments are provided in order to give value to the political-ideological context of the last decades of the II century B.C.: in these years, pietas emerged alongside libertas as a fundamental value of the popularis ideological construct. This tradition was inspired by the oratorical and literary self-representation of Gaius Gracchus, that made his pietas erga fratrem and the pious portrayal of the family an important pillar of his legitimizing agenda. The political heirs of the Gracchi, such as C. Memmius and L. Apuleius Saturninus, continued to claim vengeance for the killed brothers and to blame the behaviour of the optimates – so that pietas remained a profitable slogan of the popularis political tradition. In this respect, Aetna’s eruptions in the Gracchan period and their explanation as prodigia formed an ideal humus for actualising the type of the Catanean brothers as catalyzing reference to the pietas popularis.

This epigraphic text is a fundamental source, not only to obtain an accurate analysis of the diplomatic and military events of the so-called First Macedonian War, but also to understand the complicated development of the political and military relations between Romans and Greeks (in particular Aetolians), especially in the period which goes from the Hannibalic war to the coming of Rome in the Hellenistic world.

He is especially known for thought-provoking and fruitful studies on the Republican 'political culture', which have stimulated much debate and further research. One of Hölkeskamp's distinctive features as a scholar is the consistent updating of his papers and books: revisions are apparent in the new edition of Die Entstehung der Nobilität (2011), in the many translations of the authoritative Rekonstruktionen einer Republik (2004), and in the previous collections of his essays, Senatus Populusque Romanus (2004) and Libera Res Publica (2017).
