The screenplays are also mainly written by male authors. The TV series Bob’s Burgers represents a change in this regard, as nearly half of the screenwriters are women, which is also reflected in the series’ portrayal of female characters. This article therefore examines which progressive gender identities Bob’s Burgers offers in animated sitcoms. The aim is to compare the female characters of Bob’s Burgers with the female characters in other animated TV series written by male screenwriters in which a nuclear family is thematized. Stereotype analysis is used as a method for this article by referring to the feminist and queer concepts of Laura Mulvey and Judith Butler, among others. This paper proposes a method of analysis that may be used to systematically examine queerbaiting by combining audio-visual aesthetics, narrative motifs, and discourses. This is exemplified by an analysis of the friendship between the two main characters, the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, in the first season of the Amazon Prime TV series Good Omens (2019–). In doing so, this essay investigates how sentimentality plays a crucial role in queerbaiting. I propose, ultimately, that formulas borrowed from romance films can be found in contemporary buddy TV series featuring two male-staged protagonists by comparing Good Omens to other TV series in which queerbaiting takes place, such as Sherlock (2010–2017) and Supernatural (2005–2020). "Oh, the [digital] Humanities!" - Eine quantitative Gender-Analyse von The Big Bang Theory, 2023

This paper aims to use quantitative methods to compare how men and women are portrayed in the pop... more This paper aims to use quantitative methods to compare how men and women are portrayed in the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory and whether both genders are equally represented. First, an analysis will be conducted to examine differences in the proportion of speaking time (number of speeches, percentage of speeches in the show, percentage of words in the show and average speech length) between male and female characters. Several decades ago, Laura Mulvey noted in her canonical essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" that women in films are often relegated to more passive roles, serving as beautiful, erotic objects, while men take on more active roles that drive the narrative forward. This concept can be extended to dialogue shares, as greater or lesser speaking time implies more active or passive roles, respectively. In the second part of the study, the focus will shift to whether the characters in The Big Bang Theory discuss stereotypical topics and hobbies typically associated with their gender. Beyond passivity, it is frequently observed in films and television series that women are subjected to more negative stereotypes than men. The renowned gender theorist Judith Butler, in her book "Gender Trouble", argues that socially constructed notions of gender can only be transformed by disrupting or parodying them, for example, through camp aesthetics. In this context, the study will examine whether the series succeeds in challenging traditional stereotypes and contributing to the portrayal of positive and subversive images of men and women on television. Furthermore, the paper will evaluate the tools used in the analysis, highlighting the possibilities and limitations of digital methods in media studies, such as distant reading. However, the Snowden documents reveal that the U.S. government has primarily used this data for political and societal purposes. Data can, for instance, be employed to predict or control human behavior. Studies have shown that the mere feeling of being watched can cause internet users to alter their communication behavior, thereby restricting their fundamental rights, such as freedom of information and freedom of expression. This paper is dedicated to examining these and other risks associated with surveillance, as well as offering solutions for protecting oneself against data espionage. Michel Foucault's theory of panopticism will serve as the theoretical framework for this analysis. In contrast, the graphic novel Watchmen (1986/87) both subverts and advances the ubiquitous comic book genre through intertextual and interpictorial references. The superheroes in Watchmen do not conform to the stereotype of selfless, morally impeccable superhumans; instead, they are portrayed as multidimensional characters, as this paper aims to demonstrate. This is exemplified through the thematic exploration of the American Dream, to which the protagonists are closely tied. They serve the U.S. government during the Vietnam War, the legitimacy of which is repeatedly questioned throughout the graphic novel. Simultaneously, the work exposes the ideology underpinning patriotic narratives, such as those found in Captain America comics, which were heavily shaped by war propaganda. By intertwining references to other texts and the socio-cultural context, Watchmen highlights that superheroism cannot be separated from politics and underscores the principle that absolute power should never be entrusted to a single individual—even one possessing extraordinary abilities. Notable examples include Breaking Bad, The Wire, Mad Men, and The Sopranos. However, the streaming era has profoundly transformed both the production of television series and the way audiences consume them. The edited volume "Perspektiven des Quality Television" ("Perspectives on Quality Television") addresses this transformative process, focusing on the concept of Quality Television in the context of streaming series. Streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have introduced a wealth of high-quality series that diverge from traditional television programming, setting new benchmarks for storytelling and audiovisual aesthetics. Among the series discussed in this volume are Narcos, The Haunting of Hill House, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag, and Black Mirror. The phenomenon of Quality Television remains an ongoing evolution, and this volume aims to critically engage with and revitalize the discourse surrounding it. Research paper thumbnail of Feelings in Frames: Evolving Gender Portrayals in Animated Family Sitcoms (Program&Abstract)

The Poetics and Politics of Family Feelings, 2024

I will be giving the talk "Feelings in Frames: Evolving Gender Portrayals in Animated Family Sitc... more I will be giving the talk "Feelings in Frames: Evolving Gender Portrayals in Animated Family Sitcoms" at "The Poetics and Politics of Family Feelings" workshop (organized by the research training groups "Family Matters – Figuren der Entbindung" and "The Sentimental in Literature, Culture, and Politics"). Keynote speaker at the event: Elisabeth Bronfen. Abstract: Television is a significant component of the media landscape and, like other media forms, constructs identities. Gender identities, in particular, play a noteworthy role in this construction, evident in the history of American family sitcoms, particularly through the distribution of roles within family members (Venzmer 2016). This is because each role gives an indication of the cultural expectations of how ‘men’ and ‘women’ should perform in our society. In the field of animated family sitcoms the series exaggerate or parody gender roles at certain points in time, which is why you can recognize societal change in them. Therefore, this presentation aims to examine how the portrayal of mothers, fathers, and children within a family constellation has changed in animated series by comparing older family sitcoms such as The Simpsons and Family Guy that portray traditional gender roles with newer, more progressive ones such as Bob’s Burgers. The analysis will show that older animated sitcoms convey negative feelings towards gender roles, while newer ones embody positive feelings that are connected to ‘millennial feminism’ (Tully 2018). This is exemplified by the interaction between family members and how community is created in some television families, while in others distance is established. But you can also recognize these negative and positive feelings in the individual characters. In The Simpsons, Marge cannot break out of her role as a housewife and mother, which means that the gender roles portrayed in the series trigger depressive feelings in the viewer, as there is no scope for social change. In contrast, Bob’s Burgers seems persistentely hopeful with its portrayal of subversive and independent characters, and allows for the optimistic conception of a world that could be structured differently. In conclusion, this investigation illuminates the sentimental dimension and the evolving landscape of gender representation in animated family sitcoms, highlighting both the reflection of societal attitudes and a spectrum of sentiments as well as the emotional resonance embedded within the realm of family dynamics in television narratives.

What happens to you, happens to me.’ Male Friendships in Feature Films”, explores the portrayal of male friendships in cinema from the 1980s to the present. The analysis focuses on two exemplary case studies: Richard Donner’s Lethal Weapon (1987) and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes film series (2009, 2011). In the former, the lecture examines how male friendships are initiated and characterized in films, emphasizing the core elements that define these relationships. Additionally, it highlights how buddy-cop films reflect broader societal shifts in male friendships within late 1980s American culture, particularly through the interplay of sentimentality, humor, and action. In the latter, the focus shifts to the evolution of male friendships in feature films since 2000, with particular attention to themes of intimacy, sensitivity, and the phenomenon of queerbaiting.

Media producers employ queerbaiting by incorporating homoerotic or romantic plotlines involving two same-sex characters in order to attract an LGBTQ+ audience. This presentation posits that sentimentality plays a crucial role in queerbaiting and in shaping the affective engagement of viewers. Through sentimental aesthetics and narrative strategies, television series not only captivate their fanbase, creating a form of "addiction," but also foster a sentimental dependency between television producers and their audiences. This phenomenon is exemplified through the case study of the television series Good Omens (showrunner: Neil Gaiman) and its fandom. The aim of the presentation is twofold: first, to illustrate how fans express their "television addiction" through creative fan activities such as fan fiction and fan art; and second, to examine the ways in which television producers themselves become dependent on fans and their fan-made products—not merely on a commercial level but also on a sentimental one. Research paper thumbnail of “You’re My Best Friend”? Queerbaiting through Sentimental Ballads in Contemporary Buddy TV Series and Its Affective Impact on Fan Practices: Exemplified by Queen Songs in Good Omens (Poster&Abstract)

The aim is to examine how these media texts affect viewers through sentimental music, and, further, how these stimulate affective appropriation processes and participatory culture, especially the creation of romantic fan products. Examples to be discussed will include songs by British band Queen in the Amazon Prime series "Good Omens". The presentation seeks to analyze how the Queen ballads in "Good Omens" create sentimental atmospheres between the two male protagonists, with the result being that, through heavy affection, fans read the two characters as a homosexual couple. This can be seen, for example, in fans' reemployment of these songs-e.g., "Somebody To Love"-in the production of their own media including fan art and YouTube videos. Fans stage romantic scenarios between the two protagonists through the implementation of these songs in combination with aesthetics like slow motion, the use of romantic emoticons, or through cutting various scenes together that entail homoerotic connotations like male gazing or ambiguous dialogues. I propose, ultimately, that through the use of Queen ballads queerbaiting takes place from the side of the makers of "Good Omens" to encourage fans to make free advertising for the TV series in their fan products. Queerbaiting is a strategy that seems to be hardly known in the research landscape and that has so far received very little attention. The presentation intends to show that sentimental aesthetics, including those in music, play a crucial role in queerbaiting and the general affective engagement of audiences. The aim of the study is to determine how such texts, through their aesthetic design and narrative strategies, affect audiences and thereby inspire creative processes of appropriation and emotionally driven media practices, particularly the writing of fan fiction. The primary focus is on fan fictions written by female fans that transform two male characters, who are depicted in the original texts as having a heterosexual friendship ('buddies'), into a homosexual couple and create a love story. The project seeks to analyze the motivations behind this narrative shift, centering on the phenomenon of queerbaiting. Queerbaiting is a marketing technique that remains largely unknown in German-language scholarship and has received limited attention in international research. Through queerbaiting, media producers aim to attract an LGBTQ+ audience by incorporating homoerotic or romantic plotlines involving the two protagonists. The paper aims to demonstrate that sentimentality plays a crucial role in queerbaiting and in shaping audience engagement. It examines films and television series that employ sentimental codes, such as Star Trek, Supernatural, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter. Using an interdisciplinary approach that combines methods such as classical film analysis, affect poetics, and gender analysis, the project intends to identify patterns of sentimentality in the audiovisual representation of male friendships. Ultimately, it seeks to systematize the relationship between queerbaiting, audience affect, and fandom.

"Oh, the [digital] Humanities!" - Eine quantitative Gender-Analyse von The Big Bang Theory, 2023

He asserts that the historical representation of sexuality and gender—under headings such as pederasty, sodomy, and pathologization—continues to shape the contemporary iconography of queer male desire (cf. p. 49). The author employs the concept of the palimpsest as a metaphor for a layered historical interplay of erasure and re-inscription (cf. pp. 31ff.) and analyzes how queer stagings transform and overlap over time (cf. pp. 7ff., 30ff.).
