Compiling the report proved difficult insofar as the book is or should be the research product of numerous disciplines, such as publishing sciences, management and economics. In the scope of this report, the knowledge gained concerning economic aspects is therefore distributed among many different publication organs which may not seem relevant for the topic at first glance.
The literature report includes both academic and practical works and it can be clearly stated that research on economic aspects of the medium of books has led to a considerable amount of significant and useful publications. Statements based on previous findings claiming a lack of theory-based or model-guided research can therefore no longer be maintained. Nevertheless, it must be noted that many contributions are devoted only to particular phenomena, for example influencing factors such as bestsellers or acceptance factors such as ebooks. Larger research areas, such as the structures and functions of the fiction market, which could encompass single items of interest, are a desideratum.

The development and differentiation of devices and technologies (tablets, smart-phones) which are... more The development and differentiation of devices and technologies (tablets, smart-phones) which are suitable for reception of contents has led to cross-media distribution of contents by the publishing houses. Once created, content is made available parallel in different media channels electronically but also in printed form, an idea which is known as cross media publishing. In order to be able to produce media for reading in different variants, high-performance IT-supported processes are needed that allow an automated generation of different variants. Content Management Systems (CMS) fulfill this purpose. In research, the topic is already covered since the early 2000s, when XML technology emerged. This raises the question of whether cross-media publishing strategies are already being practiced in the publishing practice, and if so, if they are supported by suitable software systems. Discussions with representatives of the industry gave rise to the assumption that cross-media publishing is still not widespread. Where already content through different channels is distributed, system solutions are not yet a standard. Information on the actual use of these systems in publishing houses is missing. This information gap is to be reduced with this empirical study. The focus of the investigation is on German-language special interest publishers

While the ›original‹ products were characterized by paper and its physical features, the digital goods have partially dif¬ferent properties. On the one hand, the properties affect the producers of the media who have to make decisions regarding the product design. On the other hand, the user or reader of the media is affected: The manifestations of the properties of a medium can be particularly useful or they need getting used to. They can also hinder the use or reception of a medium.

Digital written media are construed to as products which inherit the properties of two ›parent goods‹. One the one hand there are information goods, on the other there is software. A product can be de¬signed in a well-advised manner only if its properties and their mani¬festations are known. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify and to describe the specific characteristics of digital written media to demonstrate design possibilities and necessities.

In the following paper, we will examine how organizational structures spanning multiple companies influence the use of information technology in knowledge management. We will identify requirements to information technology used for knowledge management in cooperations and evaluate the suitability of the existing software tools. We will point out the major weaknesses of the existing implementations and introduce technical solutions.

Mobility needs can be met in a variety of ways: motorized and non-motorized individual traffic, local public transport using buses and trains, or mixed systems like taxis and park and ride systems. Individual traffic in particular causes major environment problems and problems of traffic congestion. Strengthening public transport is often favored, but this preference is not reflected in the number of local transport users. This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that a central problem involved in local public transport usage is its complexity. The article presented here develops demands on a personalized local public transport guidance system, analyzes existing systems and presents a solution for a personalized support system for users of local public transport systems. The software Hermes was developed for this purpose. It accompanies the travelers through all steps of public traffic usage — from checking time tables to purchasing tickets to a navigation system for pedestrians guiding the user to a street address destination.

deadlocked, system of scholarly communication. Technologies are the basis for new publication forms
and services which seem to enable a faster and more cost-efficient distribution of research results. Up
to now new forms of scholarly communication have been described in the literature only in the form of
single and often anecdotic reports. Despite the large number of papers in that area, no classification
scheme for new forms of scholarly communication can be found. Therefore, this chapter aims at presenting
such a classification scheme. It allows the description of new forms of scholarly communication in
a standardized way. A structured comparison of new activities is possible. For this purpose, original
publication media on the one hand and complementary services on the other are differentiated. With the
help of morphological boxes, characteristics of both kinds of new means of scholarly communication
are presented.

In this paper the authors integrate influence factors of journal prices analyzed in different previous studies in a unified regression model based on current data. Three different models are calculated. In the first model (overall market) the largest influence was found for the size of the journal. Additionally, the authors calculate separate regression models for STM (Scientific, Technical, Medical) vs. HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) journals and for for-profit vs. not-for-profit journals. The first comparison found that the influence of the number of published articles is much lower for HSS journals. The comparison between for-profit and not-for-profit journals showed that the influence of the circulation of a journal on its price is higher in the for-profit segment.

End devices have surpassed the original idea of enabling users to talk to each other. Users are now able to install application software on their devices. This is of special interest to companies, as it portrays a new source of income for stakeholders of the value chain in the mobile internet. However, it is unclear how such applications should be technically transferred to the mobile devices. Different technologies are available for this task. This paper examines the previous use and acceptance of software distribution methods. User preferences for technical transmission ways were furthermore determined with surveys. It was not possible to identify a dominant mode of transmission. Acceptance of software distribution methods especially depends on technical affinity and the user’s gender. Thus, operating systems and producers of end devices should enable usage of multiple ways of transferring data

The consequences of this approach, however, for the system of scholarly communication and for publishing houses as participants in value added, have remained largely unclear. The paper presented here, therefore, analyzes the probable realistic magnitude of publishing fees in different subjects, based on empirical data. The paper shows that the most favorable conditions are met in the Natural Sciences and in Mathematics. However, the analysis also shows that publishing houses would have to raise publishing fees well beyond the level that scientists are willing to pay. Furthermore, the analysis leads to the conclusion that the amount of money currently available in the system of scholarly communication is probably not sufficient for the sustainable financing of publishing fees.

However, the development, distribution and installation of software on these end devices is a complex problem due to the very heterogeneous landscape of mobile end devices (especially with regard to software platforms, operational concepts and functionality), and the wide range of technical expertise on the side of the end user. Up to now, there are no empirical surveys on the deployment of software on mobile end devices that allow users to understand and assess not only practical usage situations but also further imaginable distribution instruments. Such a study was carried out on a mobile application which users installed on their own mobile phones via Bluetooth.

This article presents ‘Hydra’, a framework to simplify and shorten the development of context-aware mobile applications and therefore to make the development of these applications more economic. The objective of this paper is to give an idea of how to support developers creating context-adaptive mobile services. An implementation shown in this paper demonstrates the usability of this concept for XHTML-based information services.

Especially the traditional trade had been classified as dispensable, since powerful IT infrastructures were supposed to enable “everyone to inform themselves on anything at any time” and to obtain goods directly from the producer while avoiding the market. For business branches that act with entirely digitized products a far greater potential exists for massive structure changes of the whole value chain by established actors becoming dispensable.
The publishing industry is such an industry: The means for producing and distributing text-based communication is in the hands of many people, the bottlenecks of the world of physical goods are partly abolished. This could have significant consequences with regard to the question which actors are still involved in the value chain, which ones disappear and which ones emerge.
