This government-sponsored proposal and its transnational campaign originated in civil society and garnered transnational activist support. However, after failing to achieve its goals, the project was terminated, thereby generating widespread contestation. The Yasuni-ITT initiative provides a sui generis case study of transnational collective action insofar as it presents an activist campaign that operated with(in) the state and culminated in the formation of an antagonistic social movement. The present study uses a dynamic approach to transnational collective action in order to trace contentious interactions involving state and non-state actors in the course of the Yasuni-ITT initiative and its subsequent termination. The analysis focuses on norm-laden framing processes in order to assess the interplay between coalition-building patterns and multilevel political opportunity str...

The emergence of traditional knowledge in a governance field marked by global science begs the following question: how is it that a particular set of intellectual activities other than science came to be perceived as a form of knowledge whose attributes are valuable for governing the global environment? This paper aims to grapple with this question by tracing the emergence of the category of traditional knowledge in global environmental governance. The main argument is that traditional knowledge came to be conceived of as a cognitive resource with utilitarian and 'glocal' properties through a series of interventions on the part of public scientists and landmark environmental reports that blurred the boundaries between science and nonscience. Building upon the concept of boundary work in Science and Technology Studies, this paper...

The Platform is a crucial case of institutional change, as it signals an incipient shift from a science-centric toward a pluralistic approach to knowledge in global climate governance. This article traces this process of change in the politics and practices underlying the establishment and design of the Platform as an interface for Indigenous and local knowledge holders. The analysis shows that the sui generis design of the Platform was the product of bricolage (recombination) and translation (recontextualization) of disparate elements with the purpose of accommodating various political demands in an altogether new kind of knowledge–policy interface: a diverse boundary organization. The article makes an empirical contribution to the h...

The paper sheds light on claim making patterns in transnational contention, in particular how these affect the making and unmaking of (state-led) insider outsider coalitions.

A number of contemporary studies contend that the previously state-centric civil society is becoming international, transnational or global. Whether the emergence of an autonomous realm of world citizens is merely a projection of a cosmopolitan ideal or a real phenomenon is a contentious issue. The present article problematizes the idea of a global civil society by analysing its descriptive purchase and its normative implications. Drawing on a constructivist approach, the paper proposes the term " ideational infrastructure " to analyse its discursive and interpretive underpinnings. The analysis finds that global civil society is a reification rooted in human rights discourse as a contemporary ideal and a moral aspiration.
