Starting point of the investigation is a thesis of Konrad Schmid. According to Schmid, the statement of Ecc 1:9-11 that there is 'nothing new under the sun' is a deliberate polemic against the idea of the creation of a new heaven and a new earth in Isa 65:17-25. This paper shows that Ecc 1:9-11 does indeed deliberately polemicise against the idea of a new heaven and a new earth from Isa 65:17-25. Going beyond Schmid's thesis, it is argued that this polemic only works because the crucial lexemes ‫חד"ש‬ and ‫זכ"ר‬ are defined differently in Ecclesiastes than in Isaiah. This redefinition by Ecclesiastes is only possible because Ecc 1:9-11 does not refer to the whole context of Isa 65:17-25, but only to individual verses (besides Isa 65:17 also Isa 42:9; 43:18f; 48:6).
