Starting point of the investigation is a thesis of Konrad Schmid. According to Schmid, the statement of Ecc 1:9-11 that there is 'nothing new under the sun' is a deliberate polemic against the idea of the creation of a new heaven and a new earth in Isa 65:17-25. This paper shows that Ecc 1:9-11 does indeed deliberately polemicise against the idea of a new heaven and a new earth from Isa 65:17-25. Going beyond Schmid's thesis, it is argued that this polemic only works because the crucial lexemes חד"ש and זכ"ר are defined differently in Ecclesiastes than in Isaiah. This redefinition by Ecclesiastes is only possible because Ecc 1:9-11 does not refer to the whole context of Isa 65:17-25, but only to individual verses (besides Isa 65:17 also Isa 42:9; 43:18f; 48:6).
