The opening of archives following the fall of the Soviet Union, new editions of testimonial literature, and new media representations have fostered an increased interest in research into the subject. Moreover, popular culture itself has embraced the Gulag. Thus, old and new representations in cultural media, as well as in academic research, all compete in narrating and interpreting the history of the Gulag. Which of these stories from and about the Gulag form our current understanding of the Soviet forced labor camps? And where can we situate them within the dichotomous field of facticity and fictitiousness?
By bringing together international researchers from historical sciences, literary and cultural studies, film studies, and musicology to analyze the validity and significance of existing Gulag narratives and discuss their impact on the public’s perception, the volume contributes to a more thorough understanding of this complex subject.

In five sections, Shifting Identities, Revolution and Civil Society, Center and Peripheries, The Revolution in Media and Culture, and The International Dimension and Flows of Concepts and Ideas, the essays combine a wide range of analyses to explore transcultural entanglements and expand our understanding of the first Russian Revolution.

Leading figures of Piłsudki's government had been involved in the fight for Polish independence already during the years of the Russian Revolution of 1905. They joined the radical fighting squads of the Polish Socialist Party and participated in acts of political and economic terror. Exploring in detail the terrorist past of these later statesmen this article argues that their terrorist backgrounds were reflected in and shaped the nature of Piłsudki's leadership.

Her auto/biographical writings have been composed in different periods and to different audiences. Therefore, the question of whether the presentation of babushka’s autobiography and of the revolutionary movement changed over the course of time and in view of the audience is of particular interest. How did Breshko-Breshkovskaia represent the revolutionary cause, the revolutionary biography, and the ideals of a revolutionist’s life? Which strategies did she use to attract the audience and how did she explain her pathway to radicalization? What does this tell us about the self-perception of the revolutionaries – and especially female revolutionaries – or at least of babushka’s concept of a revolutionary life?
