While in Arcadia with Megalopolis a new metropolis is created, in the Dodecanese the founding of Rhodes is followed by urbanization projects in Halicarnassus, Kos, Knidos and Myndos. In Macedonia King Archelaos chose Pella as his new capital. In his study, Martin Tombrägel, highlights the course, causes and background of the urban development processes in these three regions, considering recent excavation results. The main interest is the urban achievements of the new late-classical cities, in which is experimented with the design of individual cityscapes. Tombrägel approaches his research by considering two main topics: On the one hand, he analyzes the extent to which the spatial, geo-political and economic differences of the respective regions have affected the course of the urban development projects. On the other hand, the study highlights the question, how literary and archaeological sources can be interpreted in combination.

In the summertime, Roman senators were attracted by the cool atmosphere of the Tiburtine slopes in order to escape the bad climatic and narrow spatial conditions in Rome. In his study, Martin Tombrägel discusses the architectural genesis of the earliest Roman otium-villas at Tivoli. A series of imposing elite residences were built here from the early 2 nd century B.C. Construction employed the new medium of concrete, and this allowed for the development of adventurous architectural forms. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the architectural history of the luxury villa. It also probes the origins of this fascinating building type in its social-historical context.

In combination with the results from the excavations it is now possible to reconstruct the development of the villa's water management system from the 3rd cent. BCE to the late 1. cent AD.

A Roman villa was investigated from 2010-2013, firstly in order to sketch the gorund plan of the architectural remains, and secondly in order to date the construction phases. The so called Villa Metro Anagnina was constructed in first half of the 3rd cent. BC, enlarged in the early 1th cent. BC, and entirely destroyed and rebuilt in the Augustan era. The mid-Republican villa evinces a unique architectural design, while the destruction debris from the second phase contains many fragments of wall painting (early Third Pompeian Style) and architectural decoration.

The development of this process can be highlighted through three different narratives related to the keywords monumentality, differentiation of design and use of domestic space.
The special issue of Ancient Mediterranean Architecture contains contributions, which are based on this tripartite division and therefore take a look at the architectural progress in the field of sacred, public and private architecture from the end of the Geometric era to the middle Imperial times: overview articles, single analyses and comparative case studies are welcome.
