Many different approaches have been developed and enhanced in the last decades. Each of them claims specific advantages over competing methods, usually referring to visual or structural properties. Although several user studies investigated the usefulness of specific approaches, for practitioners it often remains unclear what the practical advantages of the approaches are and in which contexts they are useful. In our user study, we systematically investigated the value of three frequently used visualization types for the intuitive understanding of hierarchical data: treemap, icicle plot, and nodelink. We measured user performance in terms of correctness and time and tracked eye movements for each participant. The results regarding the user performance revealed that nodelink and icicle plot yield expected and comparable results, whereas treemap is only exceeding chance level for o...

That additional information often depends on the current process step in the visual analysis. For example, the data preprocessing step has data structuring operations while the data exploration step focuses on user interaction and input. Describing suitable annotations to meet the goals of the different steps is challenging. To tackle this issue, we identify individual annotations for each step and outline their gathering and design properties for the visual analysis of heterogeneous clinical data. We integrate our annotation design into a visual analysis tool to show its applicability to data from the ophthalmic domain. In interviews and application sessions with experts we asses its usefulness for the analysis of patients with different medications.

Moreover, there is a multitude of disruptions which can occur every day during airline operation and can result in very expensive delays or cancellations [CTA04,MHR10,Now09]. In our paper at EuroVis 2013 [RPMO13], we have presented a design study about the tool VisRuption for providing an intuitive and efficient access to airline disruption data.

Proceedings of the 12th International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications, 2017

To identify ergonomically critical situations, appropriate evaluation options have to be developed to enable an efficient analysis process. Nowadays, such analyses are typically carried out with the help of digital models of the surrounding area and virtual humans. These produce a multitude of geo-referenced and time-oriented data. We present a design study on how to visualize this data to support the ergonomically analysis process optimally. As consequence of a thorough requirements analysis and design process, we propose a novel interactive visualization which provides the user an overview of ergonomically critical situations and their causes. Simultaneously, the user obtains the main stress factors in a compressed form by a glyph-based visual design. Final expert interviews and a usability study depict the utility of the proposed visualization tool.

Therefore, we are seeking to comprehend air traffic controllers’ principles of operation within the dyadic team structure. First exploratory research revealed insights into air traffic controllers’ practices, their information processing (mental models), potential stressors, and related emotional effects. This paper discusses the results and the implications for air traffic controllers’ work in general and the StayCentered project in particular. Keywords–Air traffic control; HCI; Decision Support; Mental Models.

Thus, he/she has to be well informed about the situation within the center. In order to support the supervisors work, researchers try to measure the air traffic controllers’ cognitive workload and stress. Within this paper we present a visual tool to support the supervisors awareness about this data. We outline the whole design process including preliminary studies, the iterative process leading to a final prototype, and its evaluation. We propose a design divided into three views, to serve the supervisor’s information needs. Using cumulated color values to represent time series, seems to be a promising approach for getting a quick overview on the whole situation. Keywords–air traffic control supervisor; visualization; workload data; emotion data; decision making.

Research paper thumbnail of Visual Analytics of Bibliographical Data for Strategic Decision Support of University Leaders: A Design Study

Therefore, we present a design study that aims to craft a stream visualization for the easy to use and easy to understand display of publications across university institutions. A formal design process was performed and led to a web-based visualization prototype of the available university data sets. The used visualization techniques, counting methodology, highlighting practices, and interaction paradigms are discussed and presented in detail. The design study was completed by an informal evaluation procedure within the ranks of strategic decision making staff. It turned out, that the developed expert tool allows to identify connections for future projects. In addition, it enables management to recognize promising departments or to apply support where it is needed.
